Born in Taipei, Taiwan in 1978, Simon Chang is a graduate of the department of communication arts at Fu-Jen University. In 2003 he moved to Prague in the Czech Republic, and enrolled in Master’s program in photography at the Prague Film and Television Academy of the Performing Arts (FAMU). Simon has taken stories with deep cultural depth and the reactions of people to different environments as the main topics of his creative work, focusing on marginal people overlooked by mainstream society. While in Prague, he shot photo essays of the largest psychiatric hospital in central Europe, hunters in the countryside, traditional Czech circuses, Hungarian gypsy villages, and the Czech porn industry. Simon made a record of his time in Prague with two photography books with text: and <6 Years in Bohemia>.

Simon moved to Slovenia in 2010. Short afterward his little baby joined him in the spring of 2011 on this meaningful journey. For his third volume , which was published by Locus in September of 2011, he turned his focus to the most ordinary and yet most dramatic elements from daily life all around him. He has continued the journey in his everyday life while collecting stories.

Simon Chang won the 2011 Kaohsiung Award, an important award in the contemporary Taiwanese art scene, sponsored by the Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts. He also won the Best Reportage of the year (People) with his Series of Slovenia Press Photo in 2011. In March, he came back to Taiwan to shoot the cover and inside pages of the Taiwanese popstar, A-mei’s new Album “R U Watching?”.

also won the 2nd prize of the EMZIN photography of the year 2012 with several new images as a continuity of the series. Meanwhile, Simon’s series is awarded the 1st prize of the EMZIN photography of the year 2012. Simon won the best reportage series of Slovenia press photo 2012 (People) for his series and together with the best reportage series of Slovenia press photo 2012 (Sport) for his story.

He has held exhibitions of his photos and short film series in the Czech Republic, Slovenia, Slovakia, France, Germany, Moscow, Taiwan, etc.

Simon’s photography series and video work has been collected by the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts, Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts in Taiwan, and also the Transitland EUROPA video archive (1989-2009).
