《Home away from Home》- Henry Steiner
Twenty years ago, I moved into a medium sized hotel West of Central. I have lived there since.
Until then, since arriving in Hong Kong in 1961 I had lived in apartments. For various reasons the move to the hotel made sense as a temporary pied a terre. But as I kept extending my stay, I realized how well the hotel suited me.
It’s located a short drive, by taxi or mini bus, from my office. It’s also close to the MTR station and around the corner from the tram stop. (Trams are one of my favorite things in Hong Kong.)
Mornings, I can leave my hotel room in an untidy state and by evening the elves have sorted it out, as if for the next guest.
Most weekend mornings I descend to the restaurant and its buffet breakfast. As appropriate, the lobby is a convenient meeting point.
I don’t seem to have the ‘nesting’ DNA which would make me want my own idiosyncratic space and which would reflect me and my tastes. (Of course, my office is the real home, library, workshop and communication centre.)
The hotel is a place to sleep and a rendezvous with friends as appropriate; a compact, efficient space, where I can come and go as I please.
One might make the argument that this comfortable, effortless way to reside could be the way more people will live the future. For what it’s worth, I can recommend it.
And after twenty years living in the charming, down to earth Sai Ying Pun neighborhood I’m happy to say: so far, so good.

#ChanwonHOME My happy place. Seeing how it turned into what I want is one of the best thing ever to me. Been busy for the whole month running here and there, cleaning up myself with smelly every weekends and getting everything ready like now. Finally I can call this place my home. A place where I can rest my soul, decorating every corner with things I like, slowly buying furniture and can’t wait to cook myself.
I can’t wait to spend my days with my loved ones here, watching favorite movie together, steamboat with my besties, having pillow fight and work at home whenever I want. I have to be grateful and say thank you to myself because i knew that I work hard for it and no one knows what it means to me. I still remember the moment I took my first key in 2019 and a year later I finally can settle down in this comfy space. Lying on my favorite sofa, put my favorite home diffuser at my favorite corner, keeping things clean and organizing things in my way.
My work and guest room still empty without any furniture but will slowly increase and buying our furniture to complete the whole house. Thank you so much for joining this journey with me and also big thank you to Smelly who can tolerate me with my 潔癖 keep cleaning our toilets and end up I can’t believe we did everything till today. Cant wait to share more sneak peek with you guys. Woohoooo, my friends are you ready for a staycation and pillow fight with me?
Ps: bye bye to ugly curtain and I’m so thankful to choose and get all my curtain from @baaguscurtains 💕 The best team ever. Will be moving in more items and at the end of next month will share my curtain shopping experience and before / after photo with you guys.

Books are such an important tool to add to your arsenal as a mama and as an educator. Early literacy, although so pivotal, isn’t just the only thing that they are learning as the delve into the literary world.
Little ones get to explore feelings, processes, familiarity, understanding, identity, guidance and numerous other gains that aren’t always quantifiable.
These four books are what Ella Grace chose to read last night and are usually in very heavy rotation in our home.
As a mama, it tells me so much about what she is working through. She’s at that age where she is learning who she is and that her thoughts and actions are separate from mama. But more importantly, that she understands that she sometimes makes mistakes or acts out.
Little ones always want to please their mamas and daddies the most and so through these books, she is reassured and understands that mama’s love for her goes beyond everything she can ever do or say or act or react. (I Love You Because You’re You)
With the death of a close family friend, she’s also learning about life cycles and that parents grow old and that sometimes the roles are reversed so we’ve also had many conversations about it as she processes it and why she loves reading ‘I Love You Forever’.
Mama’s favorite sous chef identifies with ‘My Mother’s Kitchen’ and I love looking for books that have some sort of cultural representation of her life in Malaysia which is also so important for little ones. Scroll down for bookstore recommendations!
And lastly, ‘My Very Own Space’ helps her navigate the introvert parts of her that is also learning to be social and invite friendships.
It’s amazing how much the world opens up for them with books but more importantly, it’s amazing how much they find value and identity in them.
How do you start?
Just read. Pick a book together or take them to the library. Set up reading corners. They don’t have to be fancy. You don’t even have to be fancy.
One of our favorite times together is reading but very often, I will also find her in her room or in our living room curled up in her reading corner just “reading” to herself.
There is no science to it. The magic is in the books itself.
