"We had a little picnic in the park after sensory class. Except the "park" was really a patch of grass in the middle of a parking lot and the "picnic" was mama's cold soggy leftover sweet potato fries from lunch.

We rushed to sensory after school, late because I couldn't find a parking spot, mismatched shoes because she somehow ended up with the wrong shoes for school and only half her uniform on because she had an accident.

There is dried slime in her hair, remnants of lunch on her pinafore, and questionable dirt and stains and grime on various parts of her from very fun day at school.

I risked it and pushed back nap time because her favorite sensory teacher called and said that this week's theme was on firefighters and firetrucks so of course mama had to make it happen.

We barely made it and at the end of class, she asked for a snack like we normally do but I had nothing except cold fries in the car because I thought we were going home after pick up.

So here she is, eating fries on a dirty bench and her eyes light up at the "specialness" of it.

"Ella Grace go picnic in park with mama!" she smiles at me.

In her eyes, she does not care that we are a hot mess, only that I am amazing mama that greets her with big hugs at pick up everyday. I am the cool mama that surprises her with treasured sensory class on her favorite firetrucks and I am magic mama that conjures picnics in the park w her as she tells me her stories and sings me her songs.

And when she accidentally spills the rest of her precious fries on the dirty floor, I am mama that gives her a big hug and wipes away the tears and holds her hand as she picks it all up to throw away.

I am mama that whispers in her ear I'm so so sorry sweetheart and mama that reminds her to be mindful of her surroundings and mama that shares with her that we all have accidents and it is how we respond that matters.

But mostly, I am the mama that tries to save this moment, this so big lesson wrapped up into the teeny tiny little things.

How cold fries and a patch of grass in the parking lot can be a picnic in the park if we don't lose our magic.

Don't lose the magic, mama.
