When the owner-cum-chef of a dim sum establishment is from Hong Kong, you know that the dim sum is the real deal. Ho Yun (Hong Kong) Tim Sum truly did not disappoint.

Ho Yun’s flavoursome Century Egg with Lean Pork Porridge was thick, and had the right gooeyness. The crispy crackers made the whole dish even more irresistible! The Pork Spare Ribs in black bean sauce was above average too! The meat absorbed the fermented black soybeans thoroughly so it was packed with umami.

Something unique about Ho Yun is that it offers dim sum rice bowls such as pork spare ribs with rice, in Hong Kong style metal bowls. Fried dim sum cost $0.90 each, and 4 pieces go for $3.50. All in all, the prices are extremely affordable. And you know for sure that you’ll be getting great dim sum here.

Xiong Kee Fried Carrot Cake is an old name in the business. Having spent 10 years at the same spot in Tampines Round Food Centre, the establishment has gained many loyal fans, and friends, over the years.

I was immediately hit by a strong egginess from the white carrot cake, which was followed closely by a lovely fragrance of radish. I loved how the 2 key flavours did not overwhelm each other, allowing the other to share the same spotlight.

The sweet and smoky black carrot cake was enjoyable as well. This was good enough for me to go back for a few more mouthfuls.

Vietnamese food can be unique and weird at times. In Da Nang, there is a restaurant that serves up raw little minnows soaking in lime, chili, and garlic. Once wrapped in rice paper and veggies and dipped into a peanut sauce, the fish are consumed. This is a popular establishment, but I didn't really enjoy it that much because it was super slimy and fishy smelling. Plus, it was too spicy for me. I did enjoy the shrimp sashimi a lot more though. If you love fish and want to try something a little bit unique then this meal is for you. As for me, it's not something I'll eat again or will ever crave.
