💕「愛台灣,我的選擇」系列第15發:臺虎董事長黃一葦(Peter Huang) 要讓臺虎精釀 Taihu Brewing成為台灣年輕人才發光發熱與實踐夢想的平台
「儘管我有著東方面孔,但我不是台灣人,家族根源也不在台灣。一直到我念大學時 (美國麻薩諸塞州的威廉斯學院,非常棒的學校),我才透過普林斯頓北京中文培訓班的機會,真正到東亞來闖蕩。
大學畢業之後,我埋首於數字和表格之間,精釀啤酒陪我撐過了這段辛苦的歲月。我的職涯始於紐約,但後來輾轉來到亞洲 (名義上是去新加坡,但主要是在印尼、緬甸和馬來西亞)。
在數字間打轉從來不是我的夢想。身為一個負責任且典型的千禧世代,我一直很想獨立開創自己的事業,如果能將個人興趣和創業機會相結合,那就太完美了。而精釀啤酒就是那完美的交集點!精釀工藝的精神我深有同感,這是一種對未來可能性充滿嚮往、不盲目接受現狀的精神;同時也代表著與一群優秀的人才,一起開發令人驚喜的產品,並打造屬於自己的社群。
成立臺虎精釀的契機出現之後,我立刻想到台灣。之所以選擇這裡,不是因為台灣文化很吸引人 (雖然確實是),不是因為台灣有著厚實的文化傳統 (雖然確實有),更不是因為台灣的好山好水。
我選擇台灣的主要原因是這裡遇到的人。很多人會說,人生中有兩個家庭,一個是你的原生家庭,另一個是你自己選擇的家庭。對我來說,那個我自己選擇的家庭,似乎就在台灣。
臺虎精釀的商標 (由台灣傑出設計師Jess Lee設計) 由老虎、啤酒花和葫蘆三個元素組成,葫蘆是古代盛酒的容器。
葫蘆就不需要多加解釋了,但啤酒花是當代精釀啤酒的基石,代表著創新創意的精神。事實上,我們使用的絕大多數啤酒花都來自美國,畢竟美國是精釀啤酒的中心 (過去20年一直都是)。美國的啤酒花產業 (還有麥芽產業) 可以說是世界之最,也難怪經典IPA啤酒中最受歡迎的啤酒花都來自美國。
商標中的老虎是為了向早期台灣作為「亞洲四虎」(亞洲四小龍) 的年代致敬。當年台灣經濟快速起飛,產業朝氣蓬勃,民眾無不對未來充滿樂觀和期待。
老虎代表的正是那樣的生機勃勃、神采煥發。臺虎167名員工幾乎都是台灣人。我們認為,與其說臺虎是一個釀酒廠,不如說臺虎是讓台灣年輕人才發光發熱、實踐夢想的平台。
我們的目標是吸引並培育人才,最終目標希望能夠在台灣發展出欣欣向榮的創業生態圈。Sway是我們成立初期的成員,她一開始是在吧台工作,非常優秀。在小公司工作的好處就是,你可以盡你所能所想去做,Sway後來開始慢慢接觸進口通關業務,現在是我們全球物流的主管 (很不簡單)。

💕Why I chose Taiwan #15 – Taihu Brewing Founder Peter Huang leads Taihu to become a platform for Taiwan young talents to carry out their dreams and express themselves
“Despite appearances, I’m neither Taiwanese nor have roots here. It took college (Williams College in Massachusetts – phenomenal place), to really bring me out to East Asia via Princeton’s immersion program in Beijing.
Post-graduation, I paid my dues shuffling numbers around in a spreadsheet. Craft beer made it bearable-ish. Working life began in New York, but ultimately landed me in Asia (nominally Singapore, primarily Indonesia, Myanmar, Malaysia).
Shuffling numbers was not the dream. So, as a responsibly stereotypical millennial, I had an urge to venture out on my own. Ideally, to try something at the intersection of opportunity and interest. Craft beer! The craft movement itself struck a chord - a yearning for what could be, rather than blind acceptance of what is. It is about building communities around delightful products and, critically, wonderful people.
When the opportunity to start Taihu appeared, my mind immediately went to Taiwan. Not necessarily because the culture is fantastic (though it is), nor because it has a strong cultural heritage (though it does), and not even because the island itself is a magical composition of mountains meeting oceans.
Ultimately, I chose Taiwan because of the people I met here. There’s a tired trope that you get two families in life, the one you’re born into and the one you choose. For me, that chosen family, well, it seemed like it could be in Taiwan.
Taihu Brewing’s logo (designed by brilliant local artist, Jess Lee) is comprised of a tiger and hops within a hulu (traditional Chinese alcohol vessel).
The hulu needs no explanation, but hops are the cornerstone of modern craft beer. They represent the innovation inherent in the space. In fact, the vast majority of the hops that we use are from the United States. Since the US is the epicenter of craft brewing (and has been over the last twenty years), the American hop industry (malt too, actually) is arguably the best in the world. It is for good reason that the most popular hops in category-defining IPAs are American.
The tiger is a nod to an earlier era when Taiwan was one of the “Four Asian Tigers.” Taiwan’s meteoric economic rise was accompanied by deterministic optimism, vibrancy, and general excitement about the future.
The tiger represents that energy. That sense of opportunity, positivity, and hope. Taihu’s 167 employees are almost entirely Taiwanese. Internally, we think of Taihu as more of a platform for young Taiwanese talent than as a brewery, a medium for that energy to express itself.
Our goal to attract and develop talent with the ultimate goal of developing the burgeoning entrepreneurial ecosystem here in Taiwan. One of our earliest team members, Sway, came on board as a bartender -- a fantastic bartender. At a small company, you do what you can, where you can, and Sway ended up taking up some of the slack in our logistics. Now she runs all of Taihu’s international supply chain (no small feat).

Buddha-like frog game leaps into hearts of young Chinese

A hit Japanese game about a frog who regularly disappears on vacation has struck a note with young Chinese for its "Buddha-style" gameplay.
近來,日本的一款經常在旅途中失蹤的青蛙遊戲爆紅,該遊戲和中國年輕人的「佛教風」遊戲態度不謀而合。
Travel Frog was the most downloaded free app on the Apple Store on Sunday, while the mobile game has been among the most searched topics on Sina Weibo this week.
星期日時,「旅行青蛙」這款遊戲榮登蘋果軟體商店下載次數最多的免費APP排行榜首,同時也成了本星期新浪微博上的熱門搜尋話題。
The game centers on a frog that goes on trips around Japan and sends back postcards, and sometimes local delicacies. Players are required to do very little: They can grow and collect clover in a virtual courtyard as in-game currency, and help the frog pack for a journey.
遊戲中的小青蛙在日本各地旅行,會寄回一些明信片,有時還會帶回當地的土產。玩家們要做的事情很少:他們可以在虛擬的庭院中種植並收集三葉草,作為遊戲中的貨幣使用,並幫助小青蛙收拾旅行的行囊。
Many people have praised the game for its slow pace, saying it taps the trend among younger generations in China to search out "Zenlike" activities.

"I wish I could be the frog I raised in the game as I would like to be able to go on a trip whenever I want," said Ge Yuan, 30, who works in Shanghai`s Taihe economic zone. "It`s like the life of a monk who lives life following his heart."

Yuan Linghuan, a postgraduate student at Tongji University in Shanghai, said her friend introduced the game to her three days ago.

"Everything is unexpected in life, just like the game. Whenever I launch the game, I don`t know whether the frog is at home, reading, eating or writing letters," the 25-year-old said.

She said the design of the game is cute, while it requires no skills in fighting, which is good for female players.

"It`s not a game that you will get obsessed with, as there is no ranking list among players," Yuan added. "All you have to do is to open the app to see if your frog is at home or on its journey, and it`s not necessary to spend a lot of money buying gear to equip the frog for his travels, which differs from other role-playing games."

Like other players, Yuan said she feels like an elderly parent waiting for her children to return home.

"I feel like I’m the mother of the frog in the game. It’s really interesting for a single girl like me, and raising the frog is a way of relieving stress," she said.

Many players regard the game as their spiritual sustenance, especially youth living alone, according to Ma Xiquan, a doctor of clinical psychology at Shanghai East Hospital.
上海東方醫院臨床心理科醫生Ma Xiquan表示,不少玩家將這款遊戲視作心靈寄託,尤其是獨居的年輕人。
"The frog brings a sense of satisfaction to the players," he said. "The game simulates the relationship of a traditional Chinese or Japanese family. Players can satisfy their emotions through the process of taking care of the frog."
「小青蛙給玩家們帶來了一種滿足感,」他表示。「遊戲模擬了中國或者日本傳統的家庭關係。玩家們能夠通過照顧青蛙這一過程,滿足自身的情感。」
Ma said the game reflects the low social demands of the players, and characteristics of the game that resemble a Buddhist lifestyle tally with the personality of people pursuing an easy life.
Ma稱這款遊戲反映了玩家們的低社交需求,而遊戲的特點與佛教風的生活方式類似,符合人們追求簡單生活的個性。
Developed by Japanese company Hit-Point, the game was included as a free download in the Apple store on Dec 6 and became an internet hit after being introduced to China in early January.
這款由日本公司Hit-Point開發的遊戲於12月6日作為免費APP在蘋果軟體商店上架,今年1月初引入中國後成為了網路上的其中一個熱門話題。
The game is available for iOS and Android systems, but the Apple store only offers a Japanese version while Android has Chinese and Japanese.
這款遊戲在iOS和安卓系統上皆可支援,但蘋果軟體商店只提供日文版遊戲,而Android則有中文和日文兩個版本。

人生三部曲,並不是談戀愛、結婚生子、百年後掛在牆上。有些人好像是談戀愛後,才變得碎碎念的。很多人也好像是昏了頭才結婚的。有些人以為生兒育女能防老,又好像是養兒煩惱才對咧!好像有點離題了。不好意思,不好意思,馬上言歸正傳。這篇文章「人生三部曲」,所要闡明的是,人生歲月裡的,良好體魄、創業的成功、婚姻的美滿、子女的學業理想、炒樓炒金炒地皮的獲利、疾病的痊癒,及其他等等,都與我們生命中的三種密碼有直接,甚至不可分的關係存在著。而這種精細的密碼,唯有鑽研玄學多年,非常觀察入微的師父,才能知之。
實不相瞞,吾玳瑚師父,是曉得這些精細密碼的其中一位師父。若人能得知,且懂得運用這生命中精細的密碼於日常生活中,一世無憂也。在吾公佈的近年裡,已有好些人向吾,買取這精細的密碼。不過之前的客人,祇買取其中一種密碼。哈!哈!哈!非她他們之過,因她他們祇知其一,而不知其二。

The Trilogy of Life is not just about falling in love, getting married and having kids, and being remembered via a photo hung on the wall after a hundred years. Some people become more naggy after being in love. Many people got married after being struck by the dizziness of love. Some people have the misconception that having children is a safeguard for old age but it seems like the offspring is a source of affliction instead. Oh, I have digressed, my apologies. Let us get back to the main topic. The main purpose of this article is to highlight the three secret codes that are inextricable from our lives and how they can help us achieve a sturdy health and physique, success in entrepreneurship, a blissful marriage, good academic results for the kids, profitable investments from real estate and gold, full recovery from illness, etc. These intricate secret codes can only be revealed by a master steeped in the knowledge of Chinese Metaphysics for many years and possessing an acute sense of observation and awareness.
In all honesty, Master Dai Hu is one of those Masters who are well versed in these secret and intricate codes. Anyone who knows how to leverage on these codes in his or her daily life, he or she will lead a life free of worry. When I first started to impart these secret codes in recent years, many clients had already bought their secret codes from me. However, what they had were only one set of secret code. Ha ha ha! But this is not a mistake of theirs as they only had partial knowledge at that time.
One of the secret codes is numerals. The others are totem, pattern, Chinese character and English alphabets. I recently divulged the secret codes of totem, patterns and English alphabets and there was inquiries from interested customers already. I would like to give thanks to the many Gods of Wealth for their blessings and protection. Only a Master with much divine assistance is able to bestow happiness, wealth and fortune to all sentient beings!
Even though you might have received the Trilogy of Life, please remain humble and respectful, be diligent in accumulating merits through virtuous deeds, respect your teachers and elders, be filial to your parents, etc. Only then, you will be assured with a generous stream of merits and fortune for your future.
