MALAYSIAN MOTORSPORTS HIGH ACHIEVERS TO BE HONOURED AT PETRONAS SIC MOTORSPORTS ASSOCIATION OF MALAYSIA AWARDS 2018
SEPANG, 4th February 2019 – The time has come to once again honour Malaysia’s top achievers in motorsports at the 3rd SIC Motorsports Association of Malaysia (MAM) Awards 2018, which will be held at the W Kuala Lumpur on 12th of February 2019.
This year, Malaysia’s oil and gas giant PETRONAS has joined hands for the award ceremony as a partner. PETRONAS’ relationship with Malaysian motorsports is deeply rooted in the past decades and most recently, PETRONAS – together with SIC – took a historic step in motorsports history when they launched the first Malaysian-owned MotoGP team, the PETRONAS Yamaha Sepang Racing Team.
Oakley will be the official eyewear for the awards that will see a stellar line-up of motorsports heroes across 14 categories including two-wheel and four-wheel racing take the spotlight for the day. The premium eyewear will also be presented to the award winners.
Among those headlining the nominees are Malaysia’s first MotoGP rider and the big winner of last year’s award, Hafizh Syahrin Abdullah, who will be gunning for the top PETRONAS International Rider of the Year award. Standing in his way are Azlan Shah Kamaruzaman who won fourth overall at Asia Road Racing Supersport 600 category; Habibullah Mohd Salleh, the FIM Supermoto overall champion; Danial Syahmi Shahril who finished fourth in the Idemitsu Asia Talent Cup; and Muhammad Helmi Azman who was crowned as the Underbone 150 champion in the FIM Asia Road Racing Championship.
Lining up for the PETRONAS International Driver of the Year award are the World Endurance Championship trio – Jazeman Jaafar, Nabil Jeffri and Weiron Tan – who made history by being the all-Malaysian team to participate in the prestigious 24 Hours of LeMans race in France, where they finished fourth in the LMP2 class. The trio was the first Asian line up to win the fourth round of the World Endurance Championship at the 6 Hours of Fuji. Afiq Ikhwan Yazid, the race winner at the Lamborghini Super Trofeo World Finals (Pro) at Vallelunga, Italy and champion of Lamborghini Asia Pro Class; and Mitchell Cheah who finished second overall in the TCR Asia Series and champion of TCR South East Asia.
Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Motorsports Association of Malaysia and also Chief Executive Officer of Sepang International Circuit, Dato’ Razlan Razali said it was important to honour the high achievers of Malaysian motorsports.
“Malaysian motorsport talents achieved tremendous success locally and abroad last year, and it is a sign of progress that we dearly wanted to see every time we put our plans into motion,” said Dato’ Razlan
“Therefore, it is essential to recognise the hard work put in not only by these amazing talents but also those around them who worked hard to ensure that success is achieved.
“I would also like to welcome PETRONAS – a name that has fuelled Malaysian motorsports for years – on board as the main sponsor for the award this year.”
Besides the PETRONAS International Rider and Driver of the Year awards, the other award categories are SIC Best Team (two wheels and four wheels) for the most dynamic and successful team, National Rider and Driver of the Year for the most outstanding achievers in their respective championships and the ever popular category Malaysia Motorsports People's Choice Award where fans can vote for their favourite heroes online.
The event will also honour the Most Improved Rider and Driver of the Year for recognising the individuals who have performed exceptionally in 2018. Two new categories are introduced this year; the Most Inspiring Female Motorsports Athlete and the Best e-Motorsports Athlete – an award that is to be given to two winners from ten finalists of SIC’s e-MCS competition that was held in conjunction with the 2018 Malaysia Championship Series (MCS) and paving the way for e-Motorsports championship in Malaysia. The two winners will get to race in the 2019 MCS season fully sponsored by SIC under team Dream Chasers.
A special award – the KBS Motorsports Development Award – will see recipients nominated and chosen by the Ministry of Youth and Sports (KBS). It is awarded explicitly for drivers or riders in the ministry’s motorsports development programmes.
There will also be the SIC-MAM-SAM Media Award (Best Journalist) for the best article published in the media, SIC-MAM-SAM Media Award (Best Photographer) for the photographer who captured the most extraordinary moment of the year, and the SIC-MAM-SAM Media Award (Best Electronic Media).
The award ceremony will also see new inductees honoured into the Malaysian Motorsport Hall of Fame. For the first time, the Lifetime Achievement award will be introduced to honour the contributions and sacrifices of the individual to develop and gain recognition for Malaysian motorsports.
All nominees are selected by a list of individuals comprising experts and individuals who have played a vital role in the motorsports industry. The winners will be announced at the awards night.

Whether it be regular season, playoffs or the All-Star Game, you can take Tim Duncan to the bank.
Duncan's patented bank shot with 26 seconds left provided the final lead change of a seesaw fourth quarter and helped the Western Conference to a 136-132 victory over the Eastern Conference at the Staples Center.
With flashy performances from hometown heroes Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O'Neal, the West won for the third straight time. But with the game in the balance, West coach Flip Saunders went to Duncan, the superstar forward of the NBA champion San Antonio Spurs.
Working against New Orleans Hornets center Jamaal Magloire, Duncan buried a turnaround bank shot to give the West a 133-132 edge, the sixth lead change of the final period.
"It was a play that Flip drew up a couple of options to it," Duncan said. "I was kind of the third one."
"Timmy is one of those guys, he makes big plays," Saunders said.
The East had two more chances, but Orlando's Tracy McGrady threw away a lob pass and - after Seattle's Ray Allen made two free throws - Milwaukee's Michael Redd missed a potential tying 3-pointer.
Duncan, who shared All-Star MVP honors with O'Neal in 2000, sank a free throw to seal it. He had a highly characteristic 14 points and 13 rebounds as part of a balanced attack that was tilted in the West's favor by Lakers teammates O'Neal and Bryant.
"My game doesn't change from a regular game to an All-Star Game," Duncan said. "I wish I could be involved in the high-flying stuff, but that's just not what I do."
O'Neal had 24 points, 11 rebounds, a handful of thunderous dunks and several comedic moments as he captured his second All-Star MVP award.
"I'm not one really known known to be taking over an All-Star Game," O'Neal said. "I said to myself if it's going good, nobody is really shining, I'm going to go ahead and go for it."
Bryant, who arrived late to the arena, had 20 points and five steals. He heard some boos from the crowd when he opted for a layup rather than a dunk on a breakaway in the third quarter.
"I just didn't have the momentum so I just laid it in," he said.
For the third time in four years, the midseason showcase came down to the closing moments. A free throw by Duncan tied it at 127-127 with 2:40 to go, but McGrady, who scored 13 points, sank a long jumper. O'Neal tied it again as he hurtled down the lane for a powerful dunk at the 1:57 mark as New Jersey Nets guard Jason Kidd ran for cover.
"I just went in and took it and took 2.9 steps and threw it down," O'Neal said.
"You've got to think about your family," Kidd said. "I don't know if he has an anti-lock brake system but I was just going to get out of the way."
McGrady made a nifty lefthanded drive and Bryant drilled a long jumper before McGrady gave the East its last lead at 132-131 by splitting a pair of free throws with 37 seconds left.
"It was a nail-biter at the end," Bryant said. "It was a good show."
The West had seven players in double figures, as did the East. Allen and Houston center Yao Ming scored 16 points each for the West, while Magloire and New Jersey Nets forward Kenyon Martin- each playing in his first All-Star Game - came off the bench to score 19 and 17 points, respectively.
O'Neal was highly entertaining. He took a couple of spins at point guard in the first half, having his drive swatted out of bounds by Magloire. He later responded by pounding a shot by Magloire into the seats.
"I had a lot of fun," O'Neal said. "A couple of people told me if I get it, there's an opening, they want me to go coast to coast."
In the third quarter, O'Neal scored 10 points on the court and countless points off it. One of his dunks rocked the backboard stanchion so severely it prompted referee Steve Javie to ask if there was an extra one in the building. Seconds later, he scored on a post move, grabbed a fan's video camera and turned it on himself, wiping his brow for effect.
NBA scoring leader Allen Iverson of Philadelphia, who came in with the highest average in All-Star Game history, became a passer, handing out 11 assists with just three points. He had a pair of long lobs that Toronto's Vince Carter turned into jaw-dropping dunks in the first quarter, which ended with the East holding a 33-31 lead.

After being booed almost the entire night, Matt Geiger had a final minute that put Philadelphia back on his side.
Geiger kept the ball in the Sixers' hands for most of the final minute by tipping two missed shots to teammates and grabbing an offensive rebound.
The latter play brought a half-hug, half-back slap from Allen Iverson that was an emotional high for the 76ers in a 93-91 victory Wednesday night over then Toronto Raptors.
"You have to be deaf not to, so yeah, I heard them," Geiger said of the boos. "That's just Philly. When I play bad, they boo."
Geiger missed 10 of 14 shots, and kept losing rebounds to the Raptors.
When rookie Todd MacCullough replaced him, the crowd cheered.
"The crowd getting on Matt Geiger, and then at the end of the game he ended up being one of the heroes," said Iverson, who scored 37 points. "It's tough.
"For this guy to help us get to the playoffs last year and come in here off having surgery and push himself to get back a little earlier and get booed because he's not capable of doing the things that he's always been capable of, it's kind of rough."
The Raptors, who blew a 17-point lead by playing a selfish second half, had a chance to tie it or win it, but Vince Carter missed a 21-foot jumper from the corner at the buzzer.
The Sixers improved to 6-2 when Iverson scores 30 or more points. He also had seven rebounds and seven assists while shooting 13-for-34, two shy of his career-high for attempts.
Carter scored 19, Tracy McGrady 18, Kevin Willis 17 and Dee Brown 12 for Toronto, which got a career-high 18 rebounds from Antonio Davis yet still had its two-game road winning streak halted.
Philadelphia outscored Toronto 27-14 in the third quarter and 25-22 in the fourth.
"I told them at halftime let's not worry about them making a run, let's put them away," Raptors coach Butch Carter said. "I think they lost their confidence."
Geiger's last rebound led to Iverson making one of two foul shots to make it 90-87 with 12.2 seconds left. Davis scored on a layup with 7.9 left, and Iverson restored the three-point lead by making a pair from the line with 7.2 left.
That seemingly gave Toronto one last chance to tie, but the Raptors instead went inside to Davis for a layup, making it 92-91 with 1.7 seconds left. Eric Snow then made one of two free throws with 0.9 left, and Carter couldn't capitalize and tie it at the buzzer.
The Raptors grabbed a team-record 36 rebounds in the first half against a Sixers team that was missing Tyrone Hill, who sat out with the flu, and Theo Ratliff, who missed his 11th straight game with a sore left ankle despite being cleared to play by the team doctor.
Ratliff said he'll play Friday against Chicago.
With Carter on the bench for the entire second quarter, the Raptors pulled ahead with a 17-2 run including 13 unanswered points. Most of the damage was done by the big men, Davis and Willis.
After trailing 51-34 late in the second quarter, Philadelphia got back into it in the third with runs of 12-1 and 11-4 to trail by just one point entering the fourth.
Iverson was 8-for-24 before hitting four of his last five shots of the third quarter.
Iverson gave the 76ers the lead for good on three foul shots that made it 83-81 with 3:56 left. McGrady could have tied it but missed two free throws, and Iverson shook off Alvin Williams with two crossover, between-the-legs dribbles before hitting jumper that gave Philadelphia a four-point lead heading into the final three minutes.
Notes: The shortage of big men forced the Sixers to start a front line of Geiger, Billy Owens and George Lynch. The Sixers were outrebounded 56-48. ... McGrady, one night after scoring 21 against Indiana in his first start of the season, had nine rebounds, six assists and six turnovers to go with his 18 points. ... Toronto guard Doug Christie sat out with a sore ankle. ... Philly snapped a two-game losing streak. ... Toronto lost for just the second time in 14 games when leading at the half.
