在國中的時候相信大家都學過這麼一個單字 「Mountain-Climbing」當時的中文意思叫做
「爬山」。

事實上，根據路線的不同、地形的複雜度，在英文裡面有一系列的字在中文裡都叫做爬山
。而mountain climbing是英式英文的說法，並不是現在台灣流行的美式英文的說法。

在本部長到英國進修後，才理解為何英式英文會用mountain climbing來形容爬山。英國
的地形，更正確的說是英格蘭的地形除了「Peak Area（峰區）」有比較多的山需要爬之
外，而這個爬是攀岩的那種爬，其它大部份是丘陵或是平原的地形。也因此，對英系的攀
登而言，只有走路（Hiking）與 攀登（Climbing）兩種。在這種環境之下，登山就變成
了 mountain climbing。

但，台灣的登山系統，大部份不需要用到「Climbing」的技巧，而近代的台灣登山者所學
習的也比較偏美式的登山系統。因此，在登山上，我們可以依照路線與地形的難易度區分
為幾種。
1. Hiking：健行

舉凡需要走一段路的都可以稱為hiking。然而，這在登山裡面通常指的是當天往返的郊山
活動。
2. Trekking：健行

與hiking很類似，但可能在地形的複雜度上會稍微高一點，天數可能在1~2天。
3. Backpacking：登山健行

或者我們可以簡單的說成是「長天數的縱走行程」。Backpack是背包，把名詞動詞化來使
用，形容背著背包走上一段路。所以叫Backpacking。
4. Mountaineering：登山

這裡指的是地形最複雜包含了4級、甚至5級地形或冰、雪、岩混合地形的攀登活動。也因
此，在台灣我們的登山活動除了在雪季的一小段時間之外，很難可以稱登山活動為「
mountaineering」。

各位也可以在登山聖經（Mountaineering- the Freedom of the Hills）一書當中，可以
發現它所包含的內容大部份是冰雪岩地形的攀登技術，而針對Backpacking 或是 Camping
的著墨也較少。然而，對登山者的養成來說，我們應該先從Camping、Hiking的技術開始
學起，最後才去學Mountaineering的技術，才能夠確保自己的登山技術是紮實的。

同樣的道理應用在台灣的山區搜救上也是一樣。在英語系國家對於Mountain Rescue的定
義通常是在Alpine（山峰）地區的救援，這種環境通常包含著冰雪岩或比較陡峭的地形，
也因此在繩索的技術上會比較重要。而另一種在低海拔、地形較為簡單的區域有另外的字
稱為「Land Rescue」。縱觀台灣的山難形態、好發區域，我們可以稱台灣的山區救難系
統為「Wilderness Rescue（野外搜救）」相較於Mountain Rescue更為恰當，確立這些的
名詞使用，對於登山者或搜救者在尋找國外文獻時會有相當大的幫助，而不會犯了資料搜
尋最嚴重的問題「關鍵字錯誤」。
