In case some of you have been following my page for a while but don't know who am I still. 😂
“I worked in conflict zones on my own for a few months when I was 22 years old.”
“I was working in Syria and Lebanon as a freelance journalist. It would’ve been my third time there covering the conflict through interviews with the local political parties and the vast amount of refugees.
I thought listening to moving tales of heartbreak and near-death experiences would give my life a more meaningful purpose as compared to my life here in Malaysia.
I’d spend my days going around refugee camps talking to people from all walks of life. I befriended the local youth. We ate, smoked shisha, discussed ‘normal’ topics like food, travelling etc. We relied on each other to move around the land, and escaped from stray bullets and air strikes.
There were tanks and army soldiers were there to secure the area I was living in. It was overwhelming.
At night I’d escape reality in a local bar. I tried out dating apps and was surprised at how easy it was to find a match. It seemed that relationships with no attached strings were sought after in times of hardship. Perhaps they provided a quicker and more immediate sense of comfort, I don’t know.
Being in a conflict zone throws you into an emotional rollercoaster.
Surrounded by the consequences of war with no one to lean on, I felt lonely.
At the time, I longed to return to Malaysia to be with friends and family because after traveling for so long, I realised that I was just a nomad collecting stories and eventually I would leave.
I started to ask myself questions.
‘What are you doing here?’
‘You want to give the voiceless a voice but is it worth doing this?’
Now that I’ve been home for the past 3 years, it has given me time to reflect. I know I’m here to serve a bigger purpose and loneliness is a feeling I am confident I can overcome.
I am planning to return to the Middle East to be a full-time war correspondent.”
