It probably isn't easy being my kid.
You have to come home on your own after school from P2 onwards, you have to learn to cook and you have to help out with chores no matter if you have homework, spelling or even exam the next day.
Barely three weeks into 2020, I think I've made these kids work pretty hard, including helping to spring clean the house, doing the never ending laundry and getting our meals served. Yet, from their happy faces, it seems like they were quite willing to help out mah, 不是吗? Haha.
Many of you asked me what kind of kids' knives do they use to cut with and I always reply saying that they use the knives that I use too. At what age did they start to cut? Three. Can they do it and not hurt themselves? Yes, with guidance and supervision until they are independent enough. It's just like how we skipped training chopsticks altogether and let them use the proper ones since they were one year old. Funnily, many people dub the boy as the chopsticks expert, even now (remember how he could pick up marbles when he was two?). But the only reason why he can do it so well is because we let him try. And practise, practise and more practise.
I remember helping my mum to mince meat frequently, yes with a chopper, when I was in primary school. Thus, I let the little sister aka the enthusiatic chef in our home do it nowadays too and she actually enjoys it. So it's not so much about what age they must be before they can do a certain task, it's more about whether they are able, willing and ready to do it. And they won't be, if you never let them try.
As for the big girl, I am hoping she will keep up her motivation to help out, no matter how busy P5 life gets. It can be a way to destress mah, right? 功课再怎么忙,饭还是得吃,对吗? You still gotta eat no matter how busy you get, and if you gotta eat, then you gotta help lor. As simple as that. She has been showing more interest in the kitchen nowadays and I totally welcome that, even if it means she stays up a little to finish her homework.
So, to the endless chores to come, I say bring it on. And to my kids, hopefully one day you will thank me lah. #都是为了你好

Ask this girl to do revision, she might not respond. Ask her go hang up her towel, it might still be on her bed the next day. Ask her go pack the living room and, if she does it at all, she does it at a snail's pace.
BUT, ask her "Do you wanna help me make dinner?" and she comes scampering into the kitchen right away. Always.
Yup, she is definitely the most passionate one when it comes to cooking, I think even more so than me. So thankful that being in Primary 1 means she has no exams and very little homework, so we have all the time to let her pursue her hobbies, do what she likes and play with her siblings after school every day. It's a different case when they go to upper primary (oh, I know I know) so we are cherishing these simple but happy moments that we get to spend together.
Somehow, I've a feeling that she will still make time to help out even when she gets older. That's simply because she seems to enjoy the process of learning to cook and creating the final dish, and is always proud to tell everyone which was done by her that day. I'm pinning my hopes on that. Hahaha. Glad to see cooking makes you smile, my dear!
P.S. Fishballs were cut by the baby brother. Not bad, cooking also can learn to work as a team!

Best. Day. Ever.
As a stay home mum of 3, I don't usually get to rest much because of the never ending chores at home. With the Papa away till midnight on most weekdays or not even being able to make it home like tonight, our house is almost always like a war zone and everything is just messy and chaotic. Well, that said, thankfully we are all not that particular about being neat and the kids have said repeatedly "Our house is very cosy what."
Anyway, it was a long day today and I had gone to the school for PV duties, brought the boy out, travelled to get bubble tea, went home to fix lunch, washed the dishes, did up the giveaway post, put the laundry in the washer and that was when I fell asleep together with the kids in the late afternoon. I woke up with a start, remembering that I had to hang the laundry and make dinner for everyone.
Then I heard whispers coming from the living room saying "Quick, we haven't finished yet" and was wondering what game the kids were playing. When I stepped out of my room, I saw a neat pile of folded laundry on the sofa and to my amazement, all the clothes had been taken out of the washer and hung up nicely already. What?! I thought I must be dreaming.
The big girl told me she spent 45 minutes hanging up all the clothes herself - she had to stand on a chair to reach the top rack - and then the sister woke so they spent half an hour keeping, folding and arranging all the clean laundry together. The boy came out just in time to sort the socks and help out with the last bit.
Wow. I think my decision of not getting a dryer is paying off, you know, and these kids have shown how efficient and helpful they can be if they want to.
Well, if only everyday was like today.... Lol. Mai hiam. I am really very thankful when it happens and that they allowed me to get that bit of rest so I can go on strongly.
Putting this on record so I can tell them "Remember the day when you let Mama sleep and surprised me by doing all the laundry yourselves? Let's do it again, shall we?"
