Five foot way or five-legged chicken? This was one of the amusing puns featured at a fun performance at last night’s Speak Mandarin Campaign 40th anniversary celebrations. The many similar sounding Mandarin characters make it ideal for any number of homophonic puns. It’s one of the fun and interesting aspects of learning Mandarin.
The Speak Mandarin Campaign has done much to encourage the use of Mandarin over the last 40 years. But in today’s English-speaking society, many Chinese families (Malays and Indians too) use English as their main language at home. So although most young Chinese Singaporeans can understand and speak Mandarin, they are not always fluent. We are losing our bilingual competitive edge.
The Speak Mandarin Campaign must respond to this. I encourage Singaporeans to maintain Singapore’s bilingual advantage. We have to make the effort to use Mandarin in our daily lives, keep it alive and preserve the uniqueness of Singaporean Mandarin.

How Pop Singing Lessons Could Help You Prepare For Singing Contests
When you participate in the competition, confidence is one of the most crucial factors that would define your performance. Here are some tips that can give you a reference , let yourself-up to get that competitive edge:
First, hydrate your throat area. Next, refrain from eating one hour before your performance. It may leave you feeling bloated. Moreover, no caffeine and carbonated drinks before the show. Coffee or tea causes throat dryness. Furthermore, try to dress and carry yourself like star. You need to remember that dressing-up with style and individuality for a performance shows professionalism and confidence. Also, stick to the contest piece that you practiced during your pop singing classes. A last minute song change could possibly ruin your chance of rendering your best performance. Remember the make eye contact. A lot of contestants fall into the bad habit of singing with their eyes closed. Finally, don’t feel sad and give up when you make a mistake. Just keep singing.
