Why sharks matter to ocean ecosystems: an expert explains

In 1975, the fictional beach town of Amity and cinema audiences the world over were terrorized by a tactically astute great white shark. While films like JAWS often do well at the box office, their legacy is to cast the planet's shark species as dangerous predators that prey on humans. This image is highly misleading , says Andy Cornish, leader of the World Wildlife Fund’s ‘Sharks: Restoring the Balance’ conservation programme.
Sharks evolved more than 400 million years ago and continue to thrive. These ancient creatures have outlived the dinosaurs and play a key role in maintaining marine ecosystems. Human activity poses a much greater danger to sharks than they do to us, and it is pushing more species towards the endangered list - or extinction.
Around 507 species of sharks are recorded, and only 11 of those are known to have ever caused human fatalities – less than 2% of the total. Even when fatalities do happen, generally it’s a case of mistaken identity. Sharks very rarely eat their human prey, instead they typically swim away.
“The ocean’s upper surface receives the most sunlight, which enables phytoplankton – the engines of marine ecosystems – to thrive, but these shallow waters are nutrient poor,” says Cornish. “When sharks, rays and marine mammals like whales dive to feed on animals in deeper waters, they return carrying essential nutrients, which they excrete and help make shallower waters more productive.” With 500 plus species, sharks don’t just dwell in the ocean, they help shape it.

Face to face with a Green sea turtle.
There’s nothing quite like looking into the eyes of an animal especially a marine one. Just the mere sound of our loud breathing generally annoys them and if we do get lucky enough to come close to them for just that split second, the reflection of the glass on our mask makes it sometimes difficult for them to see our eyes.
Which is why trust is always important. Like with all animals, we need to let them know that we are not here to cause them any harm. The best way is to be patient. Now when I say patient, it can mean 20 mins of your dive but it can also mean multiple dives over multiple days or even weeks. It really depends.
Some might say it as a waste of time. I guess, it all depends on what you’re looking for. Underwater photography is all about timing and in order to gauge that, you need to understand your subject’s behaviour and in order to do that, you need to spend time with them. This requires patience. To me it’s worth every minute.

I know a lot of people here in Taiwan are cooped up at home due to Covid craziness. So hopefully this video will provide some family-friendly entertainment, and a fascinating look at God's amazing creation. The National Museum of Marine Biology & Aquarium is one of our favorite family activities/places to visit in Taiwan. They‘ve done such an amazing job creating a magical place where you can "go under" the waters to see all kinds of sea creatures up close and personal. Everything from “sunken ships," to the glass "water tunnels," to the exotic fish and sea animals from the far reaches of our beautiful planet, to the creatures which find their habitat in the waters of Taiwan, it's an experience you don't want to miss. Every exhibit is well designed, and is sure to bring laughter (especially the beluga whale and penguins), ooh's and aah's, and amaze everyone from young to old. This is part 1 of 2. Next week will be the final video of our visit to this amazing place. Enjoy! And thanks for watching- Peace and good health to you and yours! Your Brother-in-the-Journey- Stephen

Extinct animals bath bomb. It contains a Opabinia, a Platybelodon, a Steller's sea cow, a Megatherium or a Raphus cucullatus. I want to get a Raphus cucullatus. Which do you want? It has a marine scent(I felt it like a soap scent).
