Q1 . 吉生的早餐要吃什麼?
明天早上我會吃水果、麥片、麵包、墨西哥豆跟玉米餅!
Tomorrow I will have fruit, granola, bread, Mexican beans and tortilla!
Q2. After losing a tough match, how long does it take for u to get over it ? And how do u motivate yourself again ?
Some losses have taken me weeks to get over and some just one day. I don’t always get it right, but I remind myself of my goals and where I want to get to. That usually motivates me again. I’ve had a good support team as well, my coach, friends and family have gotten me through some tough moments.
Q3. 請問外地比賽的飲食是需要自己準備還是有專業團隊準備呢?
每個選手的習慣不同。不過為了盡量保持一樣的飲食以避免過敏等其他食物反應,大部分的選手主要吃的食物有米飯、義大利麵跟一些水煮青菜及蛋白質。比賽大會也都會準備以上幾種食物。
I think depends on the player. But it’s also difficult to eat the same foods when you travel to a different city every week. You need to adapt to the foods of that country. Most of the tennis players will eat rice, pasta, some vegetables, and a protein. And the tournaments usually provides those meals.
Q4. Who teach you Taiwanese in the US?
從小在家裡我就是跟父母說台語,出外才使用英語。
My parents taught me how to speak Taiwanese!
Q5. When you were a middle/high school kids, what was your motivation to keep playing tennis, when you lost a match (this question is for my daughter)? Do you have a favorite song(s) that you listen before your matches?
My motivation to keep playing tennis was that I had fun playing. I grew up playing with many different people and all age groups. It was fun for me to play with different game styles b/c it gave me a chance to problem solve. Losing was always tough, but when I was in middle/high school I didn’t think about losing too much, there was a tournament almost every week so I would just keep going.
I don’t have a favorite song before matches. I like to listen to US hip hop!
Q6. 現役選手,最希望對戰的選手?
如果有機會的話,能夠和費爸在籤表中相遇會是很開心的一件事。
I’d really like to play against Roger Federer. I’ve seen him at tournaments, but would be an honor to play against him.
Q7. 請問吉生是幾歲開始打網球的,要如何鼓勵小朋友喜歡打網球呢?
我從四歲開始打網球,不過一開始只是興趣。
我覺得可以製造不同環境讓孩子打網球,不一定是教練,也可以和父母或是公園的其他孩子們玩網球。
多讓小朋友到現場看比賽也許也能激起小朋友的興趣。
I started playing tennis at four years old. But I wasn’t serious about tennis until eight years old. At a young age I think it’s best to give kids more opportunities to play tennis. It can be with parents, with a tennis coach, or even at the park where there are many other people playing tennis. Also, it’s nice to go watch tennis tournaments.
Q8. 疫情下的訓練出賽甘苦談
過去一年無論訓練還是比賽都不容易。每個國家的防疫程度不同,旅行時需要的簽證及文件也不同,規定時時刻刻在改變,有時候也會因為疲勞而找不到動力。加上沒有比賽讓我們檢驗訓練成果和工作動力,我想所有球員都有感受到困難之處。
但整體而言我相信會越來越好,今年的賽程也有慢慢在回復當中。
It hasn’t been easy training and traveling this past year during COVID 19. Last year when all the tournaments were canceled for 5 months , some days were tough to find the motivation. As tennis players we didn’t have tournaments to measure our training and we didn’t have the competition to push us to be better. I think traveling has been the most difficult. Every country has different protocols and it’s tough to know that some countries may not let you in if you don’t have the correct documents. Some players have gone through that. But even through these tough times, overall as tennis players we have done a good job to come back and continue to compete.
Q9. What do you like to do in your free time?
During a training week or at a tournament we are always physically exerting energy so during my free time I like to just relax and do nothing haha. Watch TV shows and movies on Netflix. Any recommendations for good shows?
Q10. 吉生最難忘的一場比賽是哪一場?
2017 年的世大運冠軍賽是我記憶中最深刻的一場比賽。
在炎熱的氣溫及一週高強度的比賽下我感到非常疲憊,但靠著球迷們的加油及鼓勵,我最終成功拿到金牌!我永遠不會忘記 :)
University games 2017 in Taipei. I have never played in an atmosphere like that before. The energy was really amazing. There were times during the match where i would feel tired but the fans kept me going and pushed me. I will remember that week forever.

英語で4つの意味の「やっぱり」を表現

日本語の「やっぱり」は、状況に応じて色々な意味合いとして使われていますが、今回はその中でも最も代表的と思われる4通りの「やっぱり」の使い方をピックアップして、それぞれ英語ではどのように表現するのかご紹介したいと思います。

1) I knew it
→ 「やっぱりね / やっぱりそうか」
--------------------------------------------------
まずは「思ってた通り」の意味として使われる「やっぱり」からスタートしましょう。例えば、友達の彼氏が浮気しているんじゃないかと薄々感づいていたところ、案の定、その彼氏が浮気していたことが発覚した時に「I knew it!(やっぱりね)」と言うことができます。なんとなく感づいていた通りの結果や、予想通りの結末になる場面でよく使われる言い回しです。この表現を口にするときは knew の部分を強調して感情を込めて言うことがポイントです。
また「I knew he wasn’t going to show up.(やっぱり彼来なかったね)」のように「I knew」の後に予想していた出来事を続けて文章を組み立てることもできます。
ちなみに「As I thought, he didn’t show up.」や「As I expected he didn’t show up.」のように「As I thought」または「As I expected」も同じ意味としてを使うことができますが、両者はややフォーマルな響きがあるので、カジュアルな日常会話では「I knew」を使うと良いでしょう。
✔日常会話では「I knew it!」の代わりに「That’s what I thought.」の表現もよく使われます。両方とも「やっぱりね」を意味し、どちらを使ってもOKです。
✔「I knew that.」のように it の代わりにthat を使うと「あ、それ知ってたよ。」といったニュアンスになり、単に教えてもらう前から知っていたことを示すことになります。
<例文>
I knew it! I told you he was cheating!
(やっぱりね。 彼、浮気しているって言ったでしょう。)
I knew it wasn't going to work out. Oh well, at least we tried.
(やっぱり上手くいかなかったね。やるだけのことはやったんだから、しょうがないよ。)
She grew up in the States? That's what I thought. No wonder her English is really good.
(彼女ってアメリカで育ったの?やっぱりね。だから英語が上手なんだ。)

2) I should have _____
→ 「やっぱり〜すればよかった」

既に起きてしまった出来事を後悔するニュアンスで「やっぱり〜すればよかったな」と言いたい時は「I should have ~」の形式を使います。should have の後には過去分詞がフォローし、「I should have bought it.(やっぱり買っておけばよかったな)」や「I should have gone.(やっぱり行っておけばよかったな)と表現します。
日常会話では should have を should’ve と略して言うのが一般的で、その場合は「shoulda」のような音で発音します。上記の例文も「I shoulda bought it」や「I shouda gone」のように言うことで、よりネイティブっぽい響きになります。
ちなみに I knew と組み合わせて「I knew I should have ~」と言うこともできます。基本的に I should have だけで表現するのと意味は同じですが、後悔している気持ちをより強調する響きになります。例えば、降水確率が50%で傘を持っていくべきか悩んだあげく、持って行かないことにしたのに、結果的に大雨になってしまった時は「Ugh, I knew I should've brought an umbrella.」と言います。
<例文>
Why did I put it off? I should've done it yesterday.
(なんでそれを後回しにしちゃったんだろう。やっぱり昨日やっておけばよかったな。)
We should've taken a taxi. Taking the train with all this luggage is a hassle.
(やっぱりタクシーを乗るべだったよ。この荷物を全部持って電車に乗るのは面倒だよ。)
It’s an hour wait. I knew we should have made reservations.
(1時間待ちだって。やっぱり予約をしておくべきだったよ。)

3) Actually
→ 「やっぱり〜にします」

お店での注文時に「ホットコーヒーを一つ・・・あ、やっぱりアイスコーヒーにしてください」のように何となく気が変わって「やっぱり〜します」と言いたい時ってありますよね?そんば時は Actually を使って「Can I get a hot coffee? Actually, an iced coffee, please. 」のように表現します。
Actually は一度決めたものを変更して「やっぱり〜にします」と気が変わったことを表すときによく使われ、特にお店で注文を変更するシーンでよく耳にします。ただし、お店での注文だけに限らず、「Actually do you want to order pizza? I’m feeling kind of lazy.(やっぱりピザを注文しようか?ちょっと[自炊するのが]面倒臭くなっちゃったよ)」といった感じで、日常的なちょっとした気持ちの変化を表す場合にも使うことができます。
<例文>
Can I get a medium? Actually, can you make that a large?
(Mサイズで。やっぱり、Lサイズにしてくれますか?)
Actually, let's stay in and watch a movie or something. I don't feel like going out tonight.
(やっぱり今夜は家で映画でも見よう。今夜はあまり出かけたくない気分なんだ。)
Actually, can we get Korean food instead of Chinese food?
(やっぱり、中華料理の代わりに韓国料理にしない?)

4) Nothing beats _____.
→ 「やっぱり〜が一番」

「やっぱり〜が最高だよ!」や「やっぱり〜が一番だね!」のように、巡りめぐって行き着いたことを表す場合の「やっぱり」は「Nothing beats」を使って表現できます。Nothing beats は「何も〜には敵わない」を意味する口語的な表現で「Nothing beats this ramen shop(やっぱりここのラーメン屋が一番美味しいよね)」や「Nothing beats miso soup and rice.(やっぱり味噌汁とご飯が最高だよね)」という具合に使うことができます。
✔ちなみに「やっぱり我が家が一番」と言いたい場合は「There's no place like home.」が定番の言い回しになります。
<例文>
Nothing beats a home cooked meals.
(やっぱり家庭料理が一番だよね。)
Nothing beats an ice cold beer after a long day.
(長い1日の終わりは、やっぱりキンキンに冷えたビールが最高だよね。)
