The world cup is the biggest sport event in the world, and even the olympics do not have such a high amount of followers.
It is also a battlefield for the two largest sportwear brands, Nike and Adidas.
Together they represent 70% of the soccer market and both of them want to be world champions.
Nike only started to be involved in football in 1994, and currently sponsors 10 national teams including Brazil, Portugal and the last "Ballon d'Or" Ronaldo.
Since the begining, Adidas was always associated with football. In 2014, Adidas sponsors Germany, Spain and 9 other teams, only one more than Nike.
Adidas is also sponsoring famous players like Messi.
Currently Adidas still has the edge over Nike; It is the official FIFA sponsor since 1970 (and till 2030) and the worldcup is played with an Adidas ball.
