Iron is an essential micronutrient, involved in DNA synthesis, oxygen transportation, metabolism, and immune function🥳!
Low iron status may result in iron deficiency anaemia, leading to poor physical, cognitive, and immune function. If we are iron deficient, aka iron deficiency anaemia, we will be lethargic, have difficulty concentrating, and have poor immune function 🤕.
Dietary iron comes in 2 forms: plant form is known non-haem iron 💚. It is less readily absorbed from the gut than haem iron of animal origin.
𝕎𝕙𝕒𝕥 𝕔𝕒𝕟 𝕨𝕖 𝕕𝕠?
Pair haem-iron rich foods with vitamin to enhance absorption 👯♀️. Spinach is high in non-haem iron, you can pair it with 🥝 in a salad! Kiwis are higher in vitamin C than oranges🍊 and lemons 🍋 . Stay away from tannins, such as from tea 🍵 , wine 🍷 etc - they inhibits absorption of non-haem iron🙅🏻.
