💛 WHEN VULNERABILITY BECOMES MY AUTHENTICITY
Long ago, the speaker curator Shaen and I agreed that my talk would be about about defining one's purpose and how that can help people lead themselves and others through difficult times.
It isn't hard to outline the talk. I know the teaching points, the modality, and the tools like the back of my hands.
I will also tell my story. There are many stories on my path of tracking purpose. But I know I have to choose the one that cuts the deepest. The most vulnerable story.
Because vulnerability is how you let yourself be truly seen. And the audience wants to see you, the real you, not a pretty shell.
But still, sitting here at Starbucks with a venti cup of black tea latte, I've hit a wall.
I have the teaching points, the tools, the story. But something is missing. Something important. Something that will add a touch of magic to the talk.
I stare at the blank page. I gaze out the window. I open my kindle library and look at the books.
Suddenly, my eyes land at the poetry collection of Mary Oliver. Something sparks.
A quiet excitement rises up my body:
"I want to read poems."
A few days later, I spoke to Shaen again. She loves the idea: "We haven't had anyone doing poetry yet! It sounds beautiful. Just be you."
So I open my talk with Mary Oliver's The Summer Day and end with Lucille Clifton's Blessing the Boat.
Several participants say that it brings them to tears. They even share their texts with me right after my talk: "That was soooo beautiful!"
That's when I knew my secret ingredient, which is authenticity.

Today I’m @ifs_events to watch a few speakers who put out messages I respect on social media. @bdccarpenter @soheefit & @jamessmithpt are all well-known proponents of taking healthy, mentally sustainable approaches to fitness and steering clear of a mindset that prioritises “hacking” weight loss or putting it before ones sanity. They’re at the front line of fighting how, particularly as we consume it in well marketed snapshots, a lot of the online fitness culture is misleading.

It’s very easy to live under the illusion that abs and guns must equal happiness - there aren’t many photos of ripped people on Instagram who look miserable, yet I guarantee you many of them are.

It’s not necessarily the acquisition of their physique that made them miserable (though, for many, a life of deprivation and lacking anything that inspires them more than what they look like could have), more that there’s very little correlation between shreddedness and happiness.

Yes, being HEALTHIER means you feel better. How ripped someone is doesn’t provide an indicator of this though.
Yes, time to invest in yourself in the gym is good for your sense of self-worth and mental health, but it doesn’t mean someone is happy with the other 23 hours of their day.

A ripped fitness influencer I know in Vegas eats donuts and pizza all day and has to recreationally “medicate” his way through his daily battle with depression.

In their podcast this week Ben & James talked about the different ways in which a lack of inspiration and contentment showed itself in their habits and decision making.

My recommendation would be to focus on the things that improve your health & contentment. Go to the gym because it’s rewarding to spend that time exercising and use the modality that you enjoy most and look forward to. Make sound dietary decisions because the energy they give you is rewarding.

Look for something in the rest of each day that you find rewarding. Time with family. Painting or playing music. Checking in with a friend who you know is struggling. Studying a subject you love that might just allow you to make it your career.

China ~ is going to go to globalism - that’s what they say, and they are also going to have two riots, it’s going to be right in front of people’s faces. Chinese, they say, are not to be messed with. Their culture that are big in pride and when they are being attacked, they will fight, especially the section of Hong Kong because there was more opening, more freedom, more freedom of thinking, they were not suppressed. This is the reason why the stuff that is happening from Hong Kong, you don’t see in another region because the other regions were suppressed through the regime, whatever that was, Hong Kong was almost like a free-thinking, almost like England, and that’s why when you try to suppress the consciousness that was free, they’re much more aware of what’s really happening because of the information and this is the reason why it’s happening from there, from there, it’s going to be like a snowball for the entire country, it’s exposure and showing the pure evil of communism, socialism is not really socialism. it’s communism and fascism , those three are connected to each other, they say. And it’s just the “interlocking”, they are talking about interlocking bylaws that are implemented very sneakily they say in a governmental structure, not only through China, but including through the government of the US. And they say pay very close attention to California. because their “bylaws” that were interlocking with that type of regime, this was based on agendas for global control, this was not based on agenda for serenity and sovereignty to US. This was based on a global agenda. This bylaws - so anybody that looks at California, and what’s happening there, you’re going to see it.
