With a globally-rare unique roof with parabolic concrete trusses, State Theatre Building (皇都大廈) is a Grade 1 historical commercial-residential building and theatre in Fortress Hill, highly praised by architectural conservation groups as a leading example of Modern Movement in architecture.
Part of my childhood was spent in the building.
To name something that's hard to forget:
1. Running races with neighbour kids on the long corridor
2. Crouching outside neighbours' home to watch TV
3. Being trapped in the lift numerous times
4. Watching on the news about the theatre's huge fire, right in the building
New World Development has been buying out properties within the site, and has bought the building after applying for a compulsory sale order against existing tenants in 2019.
Under Hong Kong law, the building's current heritage status does not protect it from being demolished or converted to other use. As more and more tenants and shop owners move out in 2020, the end of the theatre's legendary life seems inevitable.
