A Man After Yahweh’s Own Heart of Love
“But now your kingdom will not continue. Yahweh has sought for himself a man after his own heart, and Yahweh has appointed him to be prince over his people, because you have not kept that which Yahweh commanded you.”” (1 Samuel 13:14 WEB)
Why did Yahweh (the pre-incarnate Christ) choose David to be the king of Israel?
I believe that it’s because of two unique qualities of this man.
David was a worshipper who wrote songs and offered them up unto God with singing and instruments. This speaks of his love for God.
David was also a shepherd. I believe Christ wanted a king who would have a heart for God’s flock—in other words, love for the people.
These two traits means that David is a type of a believer who keeps the two commandments under Grace: 1) Believe in Jesus (Yahweh) whom God the Father has sent, 2) Love one another as Christ loved you.
In other words, love for God and love for man—love is the fulfillment of the commandments.
Love is the royal law for children of God to live by.
Under this law, we have no fear of condemnation and we have total freedom to love out of a voluntary heart.
“However, if you fulfill the royal law, according to the Scripture, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself,” you do well...So speak, and so do, as men who are to be judged by a law of freedom.” (James 2:8, 12 WEB)
It’s so beautiful because this tells us that Jesus’ own heart towards us is LOVE.
“If you love me, keep my commandments. I will pray to the Father, and he will give you another Counselor, that he may be with you forever,— the Spirit of truth, whom the world can’t receive; for it doesn’t see him, neither knows him. You know him, for he lives with you, and will be in you. I will not leave you orphans. I will come to you. Yet a little while, and the world will see me no more; but you will see me. Because I live, you will live also. In that day you will know that I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in you. One who has my commandments, and keeps them, that person is one who loves me. One who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him, and will reveal myself to him.”” (John 14:15-21 WEB)
What is the key to being able to love God and love one another?
The answer is sandwiched in the passage above, between Jesus’ two requests for His disciples to keep His commandments.
Yes, we need the indwelling Holy Spirit to transform us from within and empower us to love God and love one another—we can’t do this by our own strength.
This progressive sanctification process happens as we receive the water God’s word, allowing it to cleanse us from worldly beliefs and renew our minds.
What is the word that we ought to receive? The message about God’s love as demonstrated through Jesus’ finished work at the cross.
As we see God in His love for us, how He first loved us, we will be able to love Him back and even love others out of that overflow.
I pray that He sets up more leaders in the body of Christ that have a shepherd-worshiper’s heart who will love God’s flock sincerely and feed them quality revelations about God’s love from the Scriptures.
