Picasso once said that all children are born artists, the problem is how to remain an artist as we grow up. I truly believe this, and I think we eventually grow out of creativity because we become afraid of making mistakes. For a while now, I've been interested to try painting murals (painting on walls) but I've held back because I worry about not being able to create a piece I'm happy with. Perfectionism is the enemy of creativity - it keeps us from taking action. This year I've decided to face my fears and am excited to let you know that I'll be working on my first ever mural next week (!) in Melbourne. I'll let you know where I'll be doing that soon!
To me, creativity is about trying out new things even if it might not work, and to get good at something, I know I have to start somewhere. I've been experimenting with a ton of art supplies that I used when I was a kid to inspire the inner child in me. I can't wait to show you more over the week!
When children are supplied with paint, clay, paper, and scissors they'll use their imaginations to experiment and construct whimsical images and figures. I never want to lose sight of that innate ability, and I hope that this piece will be a reminder of Picasso's quote for all of us. May we never lose our sense of wonder!
