「Average Joe」と「Plain Jane」ってどんな人？

アメリアの映画やドラマなどで「Average Joe」や「Plain Jane」という表現を聞いたことがありませんか？これらはごくごく一般的な人であること表す場合に使われる独特な表現ですが、ネイティブの日常会話ではよく使われているので覚えておきましょう！

Average Joe / Plain Jane
→ 「ごく普通の人（男性） / 平凡な女性」
--------------------------------------------------
Joeはアメリカではよくある男性の名前であることから、どこにでもいるような普通の男性のことをAverage Joeと表現します。特に優れたところや変わったところがなく、良くも悪くもどこにでもいるような平凡な男性を指します。同様に女性の場合はPlain Janeと表現します。
✔Averageをordinaryやregularと置き換えて使うこともできる。
✔逆に「ありきたりではない」や「格別である」と言いたい場合は「Not your average ____.」と表現する。
＜例文＞
I’m just an average Joe.
（私はごく普通の人間です。）
He’s not your average Joe.
（彼はどこにでもいるような平凡な人ではありません。）
She’s just a plain Jane. There’s nothing special about her.
（彼女はごくごく普通の女性です。特に優れた感じの人ではないです。）
He’s not your average English teacher.
（彼はどこにでもいるような英語講師ではありません。）
