照片是我與從巴西來的學生,Arthur,合影於「雙橋畫室」。下面是Arthur分享他來台半年的學習感想。

My first days in the studio were a little hard to me, my drawing skills weren't in a decent level, but Mr. Yim and some very friendly students helped me to feel comfortable about the learning process.
Mr. Yim has a particular way of teaching which makes the student go from drawing until painting in a way that he never leaves out the artistc side. The drawing or painting never gets dull or cold.
I started with portrait drawing from the model, and like I said, it was hard to beguin/construct the drawing in a way that I wasn't used to, with long straight lines first, finding the shadow areas and building the darks progressevely. It took me a while to get used to this method but drawing the plaster casts in the studio helped me to improve faster and the process became more natural.
After weeks drawing with graphite we moved to oil painting, which to me was a different game. A really hard one.
Also portrait from the model, Mr. Yim likes to paint a small version first, to study color and light/shadow. Very effective way of getting ready for a bigger piece. This small one was tricky to me because small size in my head ment small brushes, detail, carefulness. I was wrong again.
Mr. Yim emphasizes the use of big brushes in his particular way of painting and even with such nice fellow students helping me with translation and giving me advice on my work, it took me a while to paint in a way I wasn't used to.
The weeks passed by and I started getting the hang of it but Mr. Yim made sure that I was doing the right thing in every piece. He was always around giving me feedback and even correcting my mistakes painting over and showing how he mixed the colors and applied to the canvas.
He sit down to paint every class and it was magical to see the portrait emerging, stroke by stroke, with very vivid colors from the underpainting, (which it was a masterpiece by itself) class after class, with more and more colors, ending in an amazing piece of art.
I often joked with some fellow students during the model break, when everybody went to take a good look at the painting and see the colors and brushworks, that everyone had that feeling when a magician performs a good trick in front of our eyes and everybody keeps thinking "how does he do it?".
It was trully magical, and he had no problem teaching his magic, and during the period of six months, he taught me well. My fellow classmates are very lucky to have him around and study under such a master.
I intend to return to Taiwan in the future, but in the mean time, I'll keep practicing his "magic".
I have to thank his daughter Iris and his son Chris for all the support, all my fellow classmates that are too numerous to mention name by name and helped me to feel like home. And of course to my master Mr. Yim for all the patience and dedication not only to me but to all his students.
