The Death of Professor Sabri Orman in Istanbul
When i woke up this morning, I received a sad news. One of the great Islamic economist minds in the modern time has passed away. The time has come for him to return to his Creator.
I have known Professor Sabri Orman for many years. I started reading his ideas and perspecrives since early 2000s. The last time I visited him was at his office at the Central Bank of Turkey in Istanbul in 2017 or 2018. I presented to him my book Shariah Minds in Islamic Finance. He was also part of the teaching staff of IIUM many years ago.
When I met with him, I had the privilage to have a direct discussion with him on many issues. It was so refreshing to be inspired by his deep bandwidth of perspectives. I always consider him as my teacher and big brother.
The most striking point that he offered me is to facilitate my meeting with Prof. Fuat Sizgen of Turkish origin who is one of the rare individuals in the study of hadith in the west (along with the late Sheikh Dr Mustafa Muhammad al-A-'zami from India). It didnt happen as yet. I will try my own way now to meet with Professor Fuat, the legend.
May Allah the Almighty bless the soul of my teacher Prof Sabri Orman and may Allah award the highest level for him in the unseen wolrd. Condolences to his family and his relatives and friends.
Turkey has lost one of her pearls. The Muslim ummah has lost theirs too.
May all of us pray for his soul on this blessed day of Friday.
