Former world cycling champion Wong Kam Po is coaching the Hong Kong team.
　
During a 20-year career, he won gold medals in individual Asian Games road races in 1998, 2006 and 2010, was track world champion in the men’s scratch race in the 2007 World Championships and competed in five Olympics.
　
That’s the kind of experience the coach draws on when advising today’s Hong Kong team.

SEPANG, March 8 -- Sime Darby Foundation (YSD) believes the two riders under its sponsorship, Mohd Azizulhasni Awang and Fatehah Mustapa, can end the country's Olympic Games medal drought in Rio de Janiero, Brazil.

Its chairman, Tun Musa Hitam said the confidence is based on the strong performance of the two national riders in international track cycling tournaments lately.

"Their performance is improving and this is good. They have worked very hard to get to this stage," he said at the official announcement of the 'Road to Rio' programme here, today.

Azizul won the bronze medal in the keirin event at the UCI World Track Cycling Championships at Lee Valley Velopark, Stratford, London on Sunday.

He won a gold and a silver at the Asian Cycling Championships 2015; a gold and silver medal at the Asian Cycling Championships 2014; and a bronze at the Commonwealth Games 2014.

Fatehah won a gold, silver and bronze at the Asian Championships 2013; two gold at the Southeast Asian Track Cycling Grand Prix 2013, two silver at the Asian Games 2014 and a silver at UCI Track Cycling World Championships in 2014.

Meanwhile, Musa said initially, YSD provided sponsorship of RM2 million for the 'Road to London' programme for the 2012 London Olympic Games in 2010.

However, the excellent showing by Azizul and Josiah Ng in London prompted them to provide sponsorship of RM2.85 million from Feb 2013 to Aug 2016.

This is the second time Azizul and Fatehah qualify for the Olympic Games.

Meanwhile, national track cycling coach John Beasley said both the national riders will continue with their training after a two-week break.

"I am confident that Azizul and Fatehah will be in great shape for Rio," he added.
