▎好吉拉美食怪獸系列 ▎
#對於不敢吃的人來說
#有些美食根本是嚇人的怪獸
這座小島上充滿各種美味且風格多樣的小吃,如小籠包、滷肉飯、蚵仔煎、珍奶、鹹酥雞、臭豆腐、麵線、水煎包等等,他們可以是知名夜市的排隊名店,也可以是你家巷口的攤子,說這是台灣最重要的飲食文化也不為過。
但食物這東西,就是有些人喜歡,有些人不喜歡。有人不吃蚵仔、有人不敢吃雞屁股(就是我),還有人對大腸麵線那糊糊的口感很反感。
甚至許多我們認為美味的小吃,在外國人眼中成了恐怖料理。豬血糕就曾榮登英國旅遊網站「全球十大怪食」的榜首。

就是這樣的想法,讓我開始創作美食怪獸系列,從中二的角度來看,這些料理後的小吃,其實是該生物的型態轉變,例如鹹酥雞,可以看成是雞這種動物另一種型態,只是轉化成這樣的型態,需要許多步驟與人力介入,而且要犧牲雞的生命,才會變成你手上那包香噴噴的炸雞(到底在胡說八道到什麼?)。
In Taiwan, there are so many delicious and variety of street foods, such as xiaolongbao, braised pork on rice, oyster omelette, pearl milk tea, pepper popcorn chicken, stinky tofu, vermicelli, pan-fried stuffed bun, etc. They could be line-up stands at a night market, or simply neighborhood locations right at the corner of your residence. Street food is indeed one of the most important food cultures of Taiwan.
People have different opinions on what’s delicious and what’s not. While some refuse to eat oysters, and some can’t stand chicken butt (that’s me), also some dislike vermicelli with chitterling due to its gluey texture.
There are so many popular Taiwanese street foods considered bizarre to foreigners. For example, pig’s blood cake was once voted as top 1 of the World’s Most Unusual Food by a British travel website.
“To people who lack courage to try, those street foods are almost like terrifying Kaijus!”
That’s how I got the inspiration to create the Street Food Kaiju Series. The cooking process of street food is similar to an evolution of a living creature. Take pepper popcorn chicken for example, it all starts with a live chicken, by sacrificing life and going through many steps to transform to a bag of mouth watering food in your hands.

A review that showed up on my "This day two years ago"
A review my Taiwan tour got from a well traveled and wealthy 20 year old.
Dope as dope
The tour was a fantastic time, it felt like being on a school trip with your mates accept you’re all adults, you’re doing adventurous things with no teacher saying “that’s probably dangerous” it’s more “hold on, let me get my camera first”. It showed us the side of Taiwan I feel a normal tourist trip would miss simply because the guide would not know or would not think we would enjoy seeing a normal activity or food venue. I got to eat the best fried chicken I’ve ever had, and it was Taiwanese style chicken not fake western food. M is a great guide, there’s no awkwardness between the group and him, he says it as it is and it help in making group decisions. If you’re a young person looking for a great experience that shows you real Taiwan I cannot encourage this trip enough. A strong five stars 🙂

As a disclaimer, my husband MANager Joe writes and creates the thumbnail so I was a bit #rolleye but hey! Let's have fun lah. (The reason behind this title is simply because I made a cameo in Marsha and Velvet's much loved hit "Sumandak Sabah" which has lyrics going "Sumandak Sabah ...mana ko mau cari? Semua lawa-lawa pandai masak nasi!")
Anyhoo...in light of the Kaamatan & Harvest Festival celebrations coming soon (Harvest Festival is a celebration to thank a bountiful harvest of rice) - I've themed our D'Varomas Live Cooking Show "Borneon with a Twist".
So what was cooked today?
1. Refreshing Lemonade with Asam Boi by Rifqi
2. Quick Steamed Mantou Buns by Suzie Alias
3. Lazy Mom's Tuna Sushi Balls by Aisyah Wahab and
4. Soup Ayam Lihing by Daphne Iking
I'd like to thank my Sales Advisors Mas Era and her 14 year old son Rifqi, Suzie and Aisyah for being my co-presenters of our #DVaromas Weekly LIVE show, as well as my wonder leaders in D'Varomas for sharing and commenting over the LIVE earlier.
Why the following menu?
1. Lemonade is our a well-known favourite beverage of most Thermomix users. Plus it demonstrates the TURBO power of the TMX where we can grind the rock sugar to powdery goodness in just 2 seconds! Add 2 cut lemons (with peel intact) with cold water, TURBO another 2 seconds and voila! It's done! Popped an asam boi cause we Sabahans love our Kit Cai Ping (kasturi drink with asam boi) so this is the twist in our much loved beverage.
2. Sabah is known for it's seafood. Dip your mantou buns (Steam or fried) with your Kam Heong Prawns or Chili Butter Crab ... delish!
3. Aisyah shows us how EASY and healthier and CLEANER it is to cook rice using the "simmering basket method". No grain of rice is wasted and her easy to make sushi rolls are definitely going to be a hit amongst my kiddos!
and finally
4. Sup Ayam Lihing (Chicken Rice Wine) is a popular soup of the Kadazandusun community. Usually I would use Ayam Kampung, but I only had chicken breasts so I had to make the broth in advance. Add a bit of lihing or rice wine and hmmmmm. Heaven!

For this video, I headed down to Popeyes to destroy a custom-made Spicy Chicken Sandwich platter! Popeyes is a fast-food chain that originated in Lousiana, specialising in Fried Chicken and Cajun-style cuisine, and located island-wide. Popeye’s famously popular Chicken Sandwich, which was introduced in August 2019 to much fanfare and demand, has finally come to Singapore for a limited period of time.
Assembled onto my platter were 5 Chicken Sandwiches, 5 pieces of Fried Chicken, 4 Buttermilk Biscuits, 1 large Mac ’n’ Cheese, 1 large Coleslaw, 1 large Mashed Potato and 1 large Fries, together with various condiments like Ranch and Cheese sauces. Unfortunately, I ordered Chicken Tenders and a few other sides that were not given to me, making this platter smaller than I planned.
The Chicken Sandwiches were a true treat and I finally understand how they were sold out within weeks in the USA. The Chicken Sandwich came simply constructed - a lightly toasted Brioche Bun, a thick piece of fried chicken thigh, spicy mayonnaise and pickles. However, the simplicity of it allowed each component to shine brightly. The chicken was crispy, moist, tender and on the spicy side. The mayo had a hint of spiciness to it as well, but it still helped cool down the heat from the chicken. There were only 2 pickles in the Chicken Sandwich, but they were refreshing and crunchy. As someone who does not fancy pickles, I actually would have preferred more in my Chicken Sandwich. Finally, the Brioche Bun added a pleasant sweetness to mitigate the spicy chicken and mayonnaise. All these came together to form a splendid Chicken Sandwich. My single criticism would be that having a slice of cheese would have elevated this Chicken Sandwich to even greater heights.
This was a relatively straightforward mukbang which I enjoyed. My only regret was speeding through the Chicken Sandwiches which made me unable to fully enjoy them. Do try Popeye’s Chicken Sandwich while it is available here in Singapore!
