Too much time in school. Too much homework. Too many enrichment classes. Too little time for play. Too little opportunities to enjoy the simple joys of growing up.
This is what happens to most kids once they hit Primary School, especially upper levels. I think part of the reason why we love holidays so much is that we feel more carefree, more stress-free and more in charge of our lives. No daily reminders to get homework or revision done, no constant nagging to sleep early, no alarms ringing before the sun rises, no rushing to and fro classes, no having to be mum-cum-tuition-teacher and feeling my blood boil, no ironing of school attires, no saying no to late night movies and family suppers. Instead, just lots of time to play, laugh, bond, enjoy and understand each other.
Reminding myself to let them be kids, and not just students, even on school days. To let them find pockets of time to do the things that they enjoy - Angel does handlettering every day, Ariel reads and draws and Asher, well, eats and plays for now. Haha. We will also watch TV together too, if we have time. Shows we watch include nursery songs, animal documentaries, news, music videos, our own videos, AGT or just answers to queries that they have - like for instance one asked how chocolate is made, so we searched on YouTube and watch the production process. The other asked about planets in the solar system so we watched clips and listened to songs to help us understand more. To me, that half an hour of screen time is when we are always together, talking, learning and just enjoying those mum-and-kids moments.
School holidays or not, I'm learning to cherish each day I have with these three and make the most of it.
P.S. It's midnight, kids are asleep (phew!), hubby is not home from work yet, and dinner is still on the table waiting for him. Gotta go keep the dishes if he ends up not coming back. #lifeofanavywife #stillprocrastinating I know I should be sleeping yet here I am. Haha. Gotta make the most of my me-time too, no matter how little I have. Sweet dreams, people!

Every story is born of a place and of a people. To keep a story alive means to acknowledge the life of the place and people. The Kelabit people have a tradition of telling stories through song, the storyteller sitting for nights on the floor of the raised longhouse, singing an epic.
The last two generations have lived through rapid transitions: from practising headhunting, ceremonial tattooing and animal sacrifices, to embracing Christianity in the 1930s; from having zero electricity to 24-hour solar-powered energy. Parallel to this was the introduction of formal schooling, money and deforestation. Whilst the storytelling traditions could not carry speed with the vast changes, one thing remained constant for the Kelabit: hard work.
Re Lekuah is an old song rich with figurative meanings, many of which are lost and open to speculation. Literally though, the song gives insight to the hard work that young women had to do in the village, and perhaps a desire and longing for something more. Placed in an urban, contemporary setting, life isn’t much different.
Customarily, an elder would transmit the oral tradition to her children and grandchildren, but Alena’s grandmother didn’t live long enough to pass on her stories. Alena learnt this song from Tepu’ Do’o Ayu, asking her blessing to rearrange and to share the song outside the community - whatever it takes to make people listen, is the reply.
Re Lekuah, the music video, presents dualities: drawing parallels and contrasts across time (old versus young; past versus present) and space (rural versus urban).
