A very interesting text about how we teach reading to kids! (值得一讀!)
https://www.apmreports.org/episode/2019/08/22/whats-wrong-how-schools-teach-reading
學界爭論不休的 whole language approach 和 systematic phonics approach,究竟哪一個有更多的科學理據,去支持成為較適合幼兒閱讀的策略呢?
Whole language approach 著重提供一個豐富的、包含讀寫聽說的語言環境,著重文字在文本中呈現出來的意思,鼓勵孩子運用思考力從不同的 cues(例如圖畫、上文下理、beginning sound)去猜估文字,講求make sense of language。孩子有學習 phonics 的,只是不完整也沒有系統。
.graphic cues (what do the letters tell you about what the word might be?)
.syntactic cues (what kind of word could it be, for example, a noun or a verb?)
.semantic cues (what word would make sense here, based on the context?)
另一套觀點則強調要 explicitly, systematically 教授 letter 同 sound 的關係,怎樣 decode words,即是在孩子初學習英語時,集中把 phonics 的系統循序漸進式地好好掌握。
香港的學校多是採用 whole language approach,而家長努力付費外補的多是 phonics。
文中詳細描述了能夠掌握有效 phonics 策略的學生是如何閱讀:
//Here's what happens when a reader who has good phonics skills comes to a word she doesn't recognize in print. She stops at the word and sounds it out. If it's a word she knows the meaning of, she has now linked the spelling of the word with its pronunciation. If she doesn't know the meaning of the word, she can use context to try to figure it out.
By about second grade, a typically developing reader needs just a few exposures to a word through understanding both the pronunciation and the spelling for that word to be stored in her memory. She doesn't know that word because she memorized it as a visual image. She knows that word because at some point she successfully sounded it out.
The more words she stores in her memory this way, the more she can focus on the meaning of what she's reading; she'll eventually be using less brain power to identify words and will be able to devote more brain power to comprehending what she's reading.//

Study Tips:
• If your pronunciation is weak, do some mouth exercises to help loosen your jaw, then practice combining troublesome sounds.
• If your grammar is weak, practice and identifying your own errors.
• If your vocabulary is weak, keep a dictionary in your bag and use it when you don't know the meaning of a word.
• If your listening is weak, jot down key words to help you remember the important parts.
• If your speaking is weak, practice speaking with native English speakers.
• If your reading is weak, read for at least 20 minutes a day from a variety of sources (novels, newspapers, magazines, etc.)
• If your writing is weak, keep a journal and write at least 10 sentences about your day before you go to sleep.
Read With You Center for Language and Development這項教學服務(簡稱RWY,亞洲客服團隊則設於北京),強調教學研究團隊的語言學背景與美國各地學校實際教學經驗,且以聞名世界的經典英文原著為教材,希望協助想真正學好英文的人,用正確的方式和道地的文本,獲得聽說讀寫都提升、帶得走又用得到的學習成果。

*My Journal*
Summer is here! Oh My Gosh, it’s so hot! But it feels good sweating under the blue skies.
My kid is done with school year. Gosh, it’s going to be a long summer!
Speaking of “long,” my hair is getting longer and longer. I need a haircut! But, Kim is all booked up. Kim is my hairdresser. She is a lovely lady. I adore her. And, she’s an excellent hairdresser. I made an appointment, but it’s not till the end of the month. Ahhh, I can’t wait!!
Let’s talk about what I’m reading right now. “Black Rain.” A novel by Masuji Ibuse. It’s about the WWII. And what happened to the people in Hiroshima and how their lives changed. So far, I’ve read about a quarter of the book. But, I’m already learning a lot, how the people's lives changed, and the differences between now and then.
Moving on! I’m enjoying learning Spanish on Duolingo so much! It’s fun. But at the same time, it’s so frustrating because I keep forgetting what I’ve just learned! Also, listening and speaking are so difficult! The other day, I watched this trailer. “In the Heights” coming out this summer. Some of them were speaking Spanish! So, I was so excited! But I couldn’t catch any words. I was disappointed with myself. Apparently, according to my husband who speaks very little Spanish, someone said “un cafe con leche (a coffee with milk).” He caught that, but I didn’t. I can understand it if it’s written on paper. But, when I was listening to it, I couldn’t catch even a single word, which was very frustrating! But, that’s part of learning a new language, right? So, I’m gonna keep learning. I’m gonna keep going. Never give up! Just take a baby step at a time!

some pronunciation words 在 Ghib Ojisan Youtube 的精選貼文
Today I talked about some words pronounced in interesting ways in Singapore. I also compared them with how they are pronounced differently in Japan, the United States and UK.
Disclaimer: Not ALL people in Singapore pronounce it the way I did in the video.

So apparently a lot of pronunciations in Singapore are influenced by British English, but some I find are uniquely Singaporean. Watch till the end to learn how to pronounce "McDonald’s" the best way in this world.

01:47 | Dollar

07:24 | Frog
07:31 | Card
07:36 | Thank You
I will cover the general Singlish topic in a different video. Thinking of how to make it interesting. Please wait ah.
