孤懸海上的法國經典｜聖米歇爾山 Mont Saint-Michel
第一次親眼見到聖米歇爾山時的驚艷感，大概一輩子都不會忘掉。平坦的天際線上、淡淡的海霧裡，一座山突兀的拔地/海而起。山頂修道院高聳的尖塔最頂端，還站著手持屠龍寶劍的大天使聖米歇爾。不知道中世紀遠道而來的朝聖者看到這幅景象，會不會懷疑自己看到海市蜃樓。
為了可以拍到聖米歇爾山的晨景，我選擇先在本土住一晚。抵達時先在旅館安頓好，再出來欣賞聖米歇爾山的夕景與夜景。隔天一早拍完晨景後，再搭乘接駁車進聖米歇爾山。
聖米歇爾山最早是隱士想避世修道的地方，而它潮汐島的特性則再理想不過。然而隨著朝聖者及觀光客越來越多，在十九世紀時，便建造了一條連接本土與聖米歇爾山的道路。雖然讓訪客不必冒險通過暗佈流沙的沙灘，以及躲避速度可比奔馬的潮汐，但也讓潮水無法包圍聖米耶爾山，失去了遺世獨立的氣質。幾年前法國政府耗費鉅資建了座橋，並拆除了使用近135年的舊路，讓海水在高潮時可以再度圍繞聖米歇爾山，重現海上孤島的經典絕景。
走進聖米歇爾山裡，看到蜿蜒街道裡滿滿的遊客、商店與旅館，會有種來到諾曼第九份的感覺。但想到聖米歇爾山做為宗教聖地，朝聖者不斷，世紀以來都是這樣的景象，好像就比較釋懷一些。
加上英法百年戰爭時，即便英格蘭人已奪下整個諾曼第，並反覆圍攻聖米歇爾山，但就是沒有辦法攻下，最終棄炮而去，讓聖米歇爾山又多了一些象徵法國的性質。這個性質深深的啟發了當時的法國人，包含聖女貞德，也更奠定聖米歇爾山日後遊客磁鐵的地位。
聖米歇爾山的人口在十九世紀中葉一度超過千人，但今日只剩約五十人而已(其中半數還是僧侶)。這樣少的人口，相較與每年三百萬的造訪人次，意味著在聖米歇爾山裡舉目所及幾乎都是遊客而非當地居民。也許有些人會好奇，這樣專程遠道而來，看一座如此觀光化的景點是否值得？
我自己的看法是，以聖米歇爾山的景觀、地理獨特性與歷史文化底蘊來說，算是世上唯一，絕對值得造訪。即便相似的英國Cornwall聖邁克爾山（St. Michael's Mount），也是當時征服者威廉為了獎勵聖米歇爾山修道院對於其在英國王權上的支持，而賜給並仿照聖米歇爾山修道院而建的。因此除了算是聖米歇爾山的下支外，規模與歷史也不及本宗。
因此，不論是在諾曼第、布列塔尼甚至巴黎，如果時間足夠，都還是很推薦來聖米歇爾山走走。
