With #NationalAnimalRightsDay and #WorldOceansDay just around the corner, and in an effort to better understand the pervasiveness of the shark fin industry in Hong Kong, I met with fellow animal activist Barbarah White and Andrea Richey, Executive Director of Hong Kong Shark Foundation 香港護鯊會 for a tour of hotspots in Sai Ying Pun, where the trade is regrettably still flourishing. I learned from Andrea that over 100 million sharks are killed every year exclusively for their fins, and over 270 million are killed now for their meat as global demand increases. 1/3 of the species are now extinct, and over 50% of the global shark fin trade passes right through Hong Kong. It’s time to end this barbaric and unnecessary practice and focus on the abundance of cruelty-free options that are now available.
