Excited to announce that an exhibition I've been working on is finally here in collaboration with Johan F. Hoorn (an interfaculty full professor of computing and design at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, specialising in social robotics) and David Hanson (creator of the first AI humanoid robot in the world and founder of AI and robotics company Hanson Robotics).

All are welcome to come to the opening and explore the magic of Art-ificial Creativity: Robots Making Art, Art for Robots, Art about Robots.
This exhibition of creative robots, poetry from the command prompt, urban signs, and innovative calligraphy emerged from the idea that art ‘does not live’ but does carry the sparkle, is capable of touching people. ‘Artifices’ such as robots and computer systems are not alive but do create art or can come up with intelligent solutions. Which tells us that physical nature is inherently creative, a secret but exciting message from artificial life!

Why are they so special?
These T-shaped signs are at least half a century old, which are disappearing quickly as a lot of old buildings were demolished. Some are even being stolen. There were 50 road signs disappeared solely in 2011.
Apart from T-shaped street signs, which were made of iron as shown in the photo here, there are also older ones, which were made of cement and porcelain tiles. See how many you can find during your next visit to Hong Kong 😊

The visual symbolism of neon has long been a significant part of Hong Kong's culture. By transforming everyday objects from the streets into a neon aesthetic, the work highlights the casual and overlooked side of the vibrant lifestyle within the district of Soho where it is full of energy and comes to life at night. The neon glow gives off a unique iconic ambiance to its surroundings which enhances its chic, urban, and stylish attraction. Scaled to life size, they also have their own presence and element of interaction. Like traditional neon signs, the 'Artlane' sign serves to name the place where it will become the heart of the area and an artistic Soho of its own...
While calligraphy advertisements are scattered across Hong Kong, none others are as ubiquitous as the iconic graffiti hand-painted by the Plumber King. Probably more widely known and recognized than works by veteran artists, the two Chinese characters of his sobriquet, which read keoi wong (literally translate into “sewage king”)usually come with his phone number as well as the promise of “no scaffolding.”
Brian Kwok, associate professor in design at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, has been studying Hong Kong’s signboards and typography for five years. To him, the Chinese calligraphy in old shop signs – from the delicate yet negligible embroidery on flower plaques to the typographic streetscape of the colonial era – are rich in history. His 2020 publication, “City of Scripts: The Craftsmanship of Vernacular Lettering in Hong Kong,” collects stories of these craftsmen, one of them is a plumber known by many in the city.
