Respect for human rights is one of the #sharedvalues that bind the United States and Taiwan with the international family of democracies. This morning, U.S. government experts from the State Department and Treasury Department shared their experience with the Taiwan Parliamentary Human Rights Commission on how the United States has used the Magnitsky Act to defend human rights, combat corruption, and promote accountability and good governance around the world. The United States Congress passed the Global Magnitsky Human Rights Accountability Act in December 2016 to allow the U.S. government to impose sanctions designations and visa restrictions on persons who committed serious human rights abuse or engaged in corruption across the globe. Other countries have since enacted similar laws, including the European Union, the UK, and Canada. Together with our international partners who share these values, we will ensure that corrupt actors and human rights abusers will have no refuge within our jurisdictions.
