《UDN》報導:
In Taiwan, two out of every ten people in poverty are children. According to statistics from the Taiwan Fund for Children and Families, approximately 4-6% of children will be born into families suffering from poverty. They don’t have enough food and nutrition, lack protection and care, and grow up to fall into the vicious cycle of poverty. “There is no simple solution to poverty.” From the long-term observation of the YongLin Education Foundation, 100 children have 100 different stories. There is no simple solution to their problem. “You have to help every child achieve his or her happiness.” Get close to them, listen to them, and lend them a helping hand.
1. suffer from poverty
2. according to 根據
3. lack proper nutrition
4. the vicious cycle of poverty
5. there is no simple solution
6. long-term observation
7. lend someone a helping hand

The 23-year-old Liang-chin Chen once worked four jobs as a child. When in junior high school, his parents failed in their business venture and were frequent by loan sharks who often came to collect debts. They borrowed NT$300,000, but with rolling interests, their debt accumulated into the millions. His family lived in metal shacks, and all their hard-earned cash was given to underground loan sharks. “I earn my own living expenses, and I went to sell mantou (Chinese steamed buns) at moving night markets for NT$5 apiece. When business was good, I would earn NT$400, and the whole family would be able to fill their bellies the next day.” Once when he was in the seventh grade, a gang member came to his house and scolded him: If you don’t have money, why do you bother to study? Why not go out and make some money?!
8. business venture
9. loan shark
10. collect debts 討債
11. rolling interest 滾利
12. metal shacks
13. hard-earned cash
14. fill their bellies
15. scold (v.)
16. a gang member

In this environment, Liang-chin Chen could not care less about school work, focusing only on working part-time jobs to make ends meet. He lived this way until his high school teacher convinced him that “studying holds the greater value” by showing him how he can receive scholarships through good grades. It’s more cost-effective than selling mantou. Liang-chin Chen climbed from the bottom of a remote high school to the top of his class in a national university. His university even helped him pay back the loan sharks through scholarships. He is currently a postgraduate student at National Cheng Kung University. This year, Liang-chin Chen is teaching elders how to exercise in Tainan’s remote areas. “I don’t have the money to contribute back to society and to help others, so I will use my skills and abilities to help elders in the community.” Liang-chin Chen is also a lecturer for Fubon Charity Foundation’s Youth from Disadvantaged Family Program.
18. could not care less abt sth
19. make ends meet
21. contribute back to 回饋給
*could not care less: https://bit.ly/3ft0UjR
★★★★★★★★★★★★
Liang-chin Chen is a paragon of the charity’s efforts to invite homegrown talents back to local comminutes in Tainan. Always smiling and speaking Taiwanese with elders, Liang-chin Chen can empathize with poverty-stricken children in remote regions. “I was a kid who grew up in a metal shack, but I met so many remarkable people who helped me during my studies. Do not be ashamed of your roots. Work to achieve your goals 10, 20 years from now, and you can do it. I am a living example of what one can accomplish.”
24. homegrown talents

29. don’t be ashamed of 不需要以…
30. one’s roots

//Dear colleagues and students
We’re continuing to monitor and analyse the COVID-19 situation and its implications for the University. Within this still uncertain framework, we’re trying to figure out the best way forward for teaching and learning. As before, our absolute priority remains the health and safety of both HKU members and the general public.
With this at the forefront of our minds, we’re announcing a series of updates to our plans for the remainder of the semester. We recognise that the choices we’re able to make at the present time are not ideal, but we believe they’re the best that are available to our campus community.
Until the end of the teaching period on May 16, all teaching and learning will be delivered online. There are just a few exceptions, including:
(1) Non-clinical laboratory, studio and practical skills components of courses for final-year students that have to be taught through face-to-face classes in order for students to graduate on time. We will arrange for these students to come on campus for low-density laboratory, studio and practical skills teaching sessions beginning no earlier than March 30. Their other classes will remain online. When required to come on campus, these students will be provided with face masks. Faculties will inform final-year students taking these courses of detailed arrangements at the start of next week.
(2) Clinical programmes in the Faculty of Dentistry and the Faculty of Medicine. These two Faculties will reach out separately to students enrolled in these programmes.
Assessment
Assessment components and weightings will conform to the arrangements already announced by course coordinators. However, for all courses taught online there will be no proctored, in-hall exams during the assessment period from May 18 to June 6. Instead, all ‘final exam’ components will be moved online. We’re asking teachers to rethink the tasks that will constitute the ‘final exam’ to ensure they’re suitable for online assessment.
Assessment choices
As in Semester 1, we’re offering all UG and TPG students three assessment choices:-
- Continue with letter grading, where applicable (contributing to GPA)
- Change to pass/fail grading (not contributing to GPA)
- Opt out of the course entirely through a late drop option
Students will be able to make these choices through a link on SIS from March 23 to April 30. Full details will be announced within the next two weeks.
Pass/fail
We strongly advise all students to think carefully when opting for pass/fail grading. Courses that are simply passed will be recorded as P on the transcript, with no GPA. For UG students in particular, this could have important knock-on effects. Internally, we rely on SGPA data for elective opportunities, such as academic exchange and other funded programmes. Externally, employers and universities around the world examine transcripts in some detail when taking decisions about jobs and postgraduate study. Students without solid SGPA data from 2019-20 may therefore place themselves at a disadvantage.
Late drop
Students returning to the University beyond the normative study period solely to make up late dropped credits from 2019-20 will not be asked to pay a composition fee. Normally, this policy will apply only in 2020-21. However, in cases where a student is unable to make up the dropped credits in 2020-21 because the requisite course is not on offer or, in special cases where personal circumstances stand in the way, an extension to 2021-22 may be permitted.
As ever, many thanks for working together with us to get through a challenging semester. Please do write to me with queries: [email protected].
Best wishes, Ian

(English writing below)
.....................
"You could have chosen to be kept by a man early in your life. Why did you not?"
"Everyone should grow abilities for their own lives. What I wish to be is a big lotus that blooms out of the slushy mud, pure and untainted. Not a little flower that is incubated in a greenhouse."
I come from a family, where almost all the women are strong and self-reliant. My 78-year-old grandaunt lives alone, never marry and has no kids. When my grandfather got married, he brought my young grandaunt to live with him. In the twenty over years he passed on, when my grandmother was still alive, grandaunt would still give a monthly allowance to my grandmother (her sister-in-law), despite being 60 over years old.
She is just a lady who works odd jobs. The monthly allowance she gave my grandmother is from her hard-earned money.
Grandaunt did not receive much of an education. I am a university graduate. How can my abilities be inferior to hers?
During my childhood, my family was laden with heavy debts. Every other day, there would be creditors incessantly calling the house phone or banging on the house door, asking for repayment. As a young girl, I often get pushed out to deal with these fierce-looking strangers. Reason being, when they saw a kid, they would often soften their tone of voice, and give a few more days for repayment.
I was frightened at that time. But if I didn't do what I was told, I would get scolded or beaten badly. Even after I grew up, there are times when I would get ridiculously afraid. I count myself lucky that the Buddhadharma has an uplifting influence on me. The terror of facing a bear in front of me, and having a tiger chasing behind gradually moulded my tenacity.
Either I don't do it, or when I do, I will burn my boats so that it's either success or nothing.
A childhood where I was constantly frightened had me promising myself this: I will never let anyone or anything threaten me.
My Bazi did indeed indicate that I can opt not to work and rely on the financial support from a man.
But for an outstanding talent like me, if I do not come out to contribute to mankind and choose an easier way out, wouldn't I be letting down the great genes of my ancestors of the past 18 generations, and the teachings from my Grandmaster and Shifu?
Ever since I started out, my work had benefitted a lot of people and my writings had helped grow the wisdom of many readers.
The skills that I hone in the past 10 over years give me freedom to earn money wherever I am. With the environmental Feng Shui worsening, the problems of mankind will only snowball and multiply. As long as I have the real skills, my line of work will only get more valuable as I age. Shifu often jokes that, if I have no business when I am old, I can still consider setting up a fortune-telling stall in front of the Guan Yin Temple at Waterloo Street, to pass time. 😄
Should I have to go through another reincarnation, at the very least, there will be this seed of unflinching courage and perseverance planted in my subconscious. Because I made the effort to.
If I opt to rely fully on a man, and have no independent ability of my own, what will happen to me when he has a change of heart?
My mum also had many offers from men, who wanted to make a mistress out of her. But for the sake of us, the children, she rejected all of them. Through her own perseverance and efforts, she still managed to raise me.
She also said if a man is unwilling to give you a legal status, don't waste your youth on him.
The adults' teaching by example will always carry more weight than what they preach.
The kind of Destiny the adults have will also be similar to the kind of Destiny their children will have.
The me right now does not have to live an ignoble existence nor live my life according to the mood of a man. When I wish to make money, I go make money. When I feel like writing to talk with all of you, I write. In my spare time, I continue honing my skills in Buddhadharma and Chinese Metaphysics, and develop my wisdom.
To me, this is the freedom that I had fought for many years. Such is the spirit that I wish for my children to learn.
Spending money is most satisfying, when this money is earned with a peace of mind. If the money is obtained through illegal/immoral ways, there will always be karmic consequences to bear, be it the spender is me or my family.
This article isn't written to look down on other women, who choose to be kept by a man. Everyone has a different motivation in life. I only wish to awaken you, to continue treading on your original pure and pristine path in life. Among my women clients, those, who chose this easy route to money, do not have a happy ending.
For me, I just think that no other person will be more bothered and diligent than me, in creating the Destiny I covet.
If I do not have the ability, I am willing to learn humbly from the right teachers, and I am very fortunate to have two great ones in my life.
I will formulate my own Destiny.
If I can't even transform my own Destiny, what right do I have to receive the red packets from others, to help them with their fortune and luck?

VLOG 15/2016: I will survive #mahasiswalapar
Who remembers the game ketam-ketam or the word "main pokiau"?
And how much could you earn if were paid to pluck white hair for your more elderly relatives? (Mine was 5 sen)
VLOG 15/2016: I Will Survive #MahasiswaLapar shows me teaching Bibik how to cold-press our juices (AGAIN!).
I also as address the article on Malay Mail Online that highlighted my tweet 2 days ago, on me taking three jobs to pay for my Uni fees, food and rent. (And contrary to what some people thought, no. I was not interviewed. The article published merely took my tweet and turned it into a story.) Would I allow my children to work part-time? Hmmm...
This episode is dedicated to Nigel Ivan Samson. RIP.

I always get questions about working in Japan without a degree; as in, whether or not it is possible to get work in Japan if you have not graduated University. I work at a variety of jobs to support my school studies, and this is one of the most exciting groups I have. These ladies are all retired, but they love English so much. Some have only started studying as recently as two years ago, and the oldest class member is 74 years old.
My friend BobbyJudo and I had talked about trying an "English Cooking Class" for a while, and when I asked if the class was interested, they were so excited, they even offered to let us take over their house and kitchen.
They loved him. :)
Usually we teach at the community centre, in the city, as it's easy to rent a room there. Each student pays 6000en a month for 4 classes a month, but we pitched in a little extra in order to bring in Bobby Judo.
All in all, it was a success. Everyone had fun asking Bobby questions about his personal life (of course, those clips don't make it in the video), and trying some non-traditional recipes.
I will be making a video soon, addressing the questions about work in Japan, but I think this video just goes to show that you are only limited by your own creativity and talent. I definitely foresee something like, "Bobby Judo's Cooking School" becoming a success in the future. ;)
