Parents of kidnapped sailors make desperate appeal to gov’t
As the deadline for the ransom to secure the release of the four Sarawak sailors held hostage by the Abu Sayyaf militants draws near, parents of the abducted sailors have made a desperate appeal to Sarawak Chief Minister Adenan Satem and the state government to come out with a solution urgently for their safe release.
It is understood that the kidnappers have set April 30 as the deadline to deliver to them a substantial sum of ransom which was believed to be in the millions.
One of the victims, Wong Teck Kang 31, had called his father in Sibu on April 12, just 10 days after the kidnapping on April 2 when eight gunmen boarded their tugboat near Ligitan Island, about 100km from Tawau.
The other seamen abducted were Teck Kang’s brother Teck Chii 29, Wong Hung Sing 34, and Johnny Lau 21, all from Sibu, Sarawak.
The families of the victims are totally devastated, not knowing what to do next to secure the release of their loved ones.
“We are so helpless, we cannot eat and sleep properly since the day of the kidnapping. It is our earnest hope that the government will help us in this hour of anguish and helplessness,” the parents said in a joint appeal.
The victims’ parents and family members had met Adenan last week to brief him on the situation as well as to seek his help to secure their release.
“A week has passed without any positive news. While we are disappointed, we are still desperately hanging on to the hope that the chief minister and the government will eventually come to our rescue
“We pray that CM Adenan and the government will respond quickly and let us know their plan within the next two days as the deadline to save our sons is approaching very fast,” the parents pleaded.
