I’ve always wanted to learn a Native American language, but it’s been extremely difficult to find anyone with whom I could learn as most indigenous American languages are considered critically endangered or extinct. So a couple months ago I was extremely excited to get in touch with someone who could teach me Navajo, the original language of the Navajo people who live mostly in the Navajo Nation located in Arizona, New Mexico, and Utah. Less than 200,000 people speak Navajo in the entire world. Navajo is hands down the hardest language I’ve ever studied, with extremely challenging pronunciation and one of the most complex grammatical systems of any extant language. It’s so complex that the language was used by the Navajo code talkers as the basis for a secret communication system during World War II.

But even though many young people no longer speak the language, the older generation often still does, and so after a month of studying the language and me and my crew’s COVID vaccinations we flew out to New Mexico to find locals to practice with. Bạn chưa hài lòng về khả năng speaking của mình? Có thể bạn đang gặp phải một (hoặc vài) vấn đề khác nhau làm cho khả năng speaking của bạn bị hạn chế. Việc nhận ra và và phát hiện chính xác các yếu điểm của mình là vô dùng quan trọng đẻ các bạn tìm được cách khắc phục lỗi.

1. Quá chú trọng vào Ngữ pháp và cố gắng sử dụng Ngữ pháp phức tạp.

Tất nhiên nếu như bạn nói sai về ngữ pháp thì có thể sẽ khiến người nghe rất khó để có thể hiểu được nội dung, thậm chí hiểu sai nghĩa hoàn toàn. Tuy nhiên bạn không nên quá chú trọng ngữ pháp và làm cho nó nhiều khi trở nên phức tạp không cần thiết và càng dễ mắc lỗi.Vì vậy, ngữ pháp trong phần speaking không cần phải quá phức tạp. Nếu các bạn nghe nhiều các chương trình truyền hình tiếng Anh trên các kênh quốc tế, các bạn sẽ thấy họ sử dụng cấu trúc câu rất đơn giản. Nếu họ sử dụng cấu trúc phức tạp thì bạn đã chẳng thể hiểu họ nói gì. Vì vậy, với môn Speaking, bạn đừng cố gắng sử dụng các cấu trúc phức tạp như đảo ngữ, noun phrase, vv làm gì, hãy để dành kiến thức đó cho Writing bởi vì bạn sẽ mắc lỗi ngữ pháp nặng hơn khi cố gắng dùng những cấu trúc này. Tóm lại, các bạn chỉ thực hiện những điều sau đây để đạt điểm tối đa trong phần ngữ pháp:

Sử dụng simple sentence, có đủ subject, verb, object.

Để tạo complex sentence, chỉ cần dùng các từ nối and, but, however, vv để nối các câu simple sentences ấy lại với nhau.

Dùng thêm relative clause (who, whose, that, which, whom), mệnh đề If

Chú ý dùng đúng thì (có 4 thì chính thường dùng trong speaking: Simple Present, Past, Future, Present Perfect, lâu lâu có thể có thêm Past Continuous, Past Perfect)

Chú ý chia đúng số ít, số nhiều và phải phát âm "s" ra.

"Keep it simple and get it right" (Hãy thật đơn giản và hiểu thật đúng)

2. Từ vựng sai

Nếu như vốn từ của bạn chưa nhiều thì đừng quá cố gắng sử dụng thật nhiều từ có thể và luôn tìm nhiều từ thật “academic” để diễn đạt. Cách tốt nhất là bạn hãy trau truốt với những từ đã biết trước, chỉ đến khi thành thạo mới tìm những từ tương đương khác để tạo sự phong phú trong cách diễn đạt, tuy nhiên nên nhớ chính các từ các khó không phải bối cảnh nào cũng sử dụng được.

Ngoài ra, cách tốt nhất để tăng vốn từ đó là tự tạo cho mình một môi trường giao tiếp với tiếng Anh thường xuyên để nhớ từ và học từ mới như tham gia clb, lớp học thêm, xem film tiếng Anh … Cách này tốt và có hiệu quả hơn trăm lần so với việc bạn cứ lôi từ điển ra tự học những từ mới mà chẳng biết đến khi nào mới có cơ hội dùng đến nó.

3. Phát âm không chuẩn

Không thể không khẳng định tầm quan trọng của Pronunciation trong môn Speaking bởi vì nếu bạn phát âm sai, hiển nhiên người nghe sẽ không hiểu được nội dung bạn nói. Một số lỗi phát âm thường gặp ở người Việt Nam:

Không phát âm "ending sound". Vd: bạn muốn nói "white hair" nhưng ko có "ending sound", ngta sẽ nghe nhầm thành "why hair". Nhiều bạn cũng thường quên phát âm "s".
Word stress (nhấn âm) sai. Lỗi này thường do nói hoặc học từ vựng mà không để ý đến phát âm, lâu dần thành thói quen rất khó sửa. Mà khi bạn nhấn âm sai một loạt từ trong 1 câu thì giám khảo sẽ không nghe được.
Không có Sentence Stress (nhấn câu). Nếu bạn nói cả 1 đoạn thật dài mà cứ đều đều, không nhấn mạnh một từ nào thì giám khảo cũng sẽ không nhận biết được Key Points của bạn là gì. Tương tự như khi bạn thi Listening, chẳng phải bạn cũng dựa vào sự nhấn giọng của người nói trong băng để nghe ra câu trả lời sao.

4. Không có sự liền mạch khi nói (Coherence)

Để thể hiện sự liền mạch, câu trả lời của bạn cần hội đủ 3 yếu tố sau:

Các ý chính được giải thích rõ ràng, có thể kèm thêm ví dụ để minh họa, làm rõ.
Các ý được sắp xếp theo một trình tự logic
Sử dụng các linking words and phrases để nối các câu, nối ý chính với ý phụ. Nếu chuyển sang ý mới, bạn cũng cần phải cho giám khảo một dấu hiệu rõ ràng.
Một số từ nối thường dùng là: However, Although, Even though, Despite, In addition, Plus, As a result, Since (=because), For example, In other words, First, next, then, after that, lastly, On the other hand, Exceot for, Other than,...

5. Không kiểm soát đươc tốc độ nói

Nói càng nhanh càng tốt? Nói nhanh được xem là nói lưu loát như người bản ngữ, nói mà không cần dịch trong đầu. Tuy nhiên, trừ phi bạn đã thực sự có thể nói chính xác và hay như người bản ngữ thì bạn KHÔNG NÊN nói nhanh. Nói nhanh sẽ làm bạn không kịp suy nghĩ ý cho câu kế tiếp và mắc nhiều lỗi ngữ pháp, từ vựng, phát âm. Vì vậy, bạn nên nói với tốc độ vừa phải và rõ ràng, không nuốt chữ. Khi nói chậm rãi, bạn sẽ có thể để ý nhấn giọng ở các ý quan trọng. Tuy nhiên, nói chậm rãi không đồng nghĩa với nói quá chậm, ê a từng chữ nhé.
