Happy turning 9 today, my dear Angel!

It's been a great year with you and I'm very heartened to see how you've taken on more responsibilities both in school and at home. You would arm yourself with a whistle, gather your troop (aka Meimei and Didi) and delegate duties to each of them as you work together to help out with the household chores. You love reading as always and it's good to see how you never reject an opportunity to pick up a new book to read.

Seeing how you are motivated to do your homework and the stack of past year papers you do out of your own accord, I am thankful to have you as my firstborn who inspires the siblings to work hard and play hard too. You are also an independent child who understands Mama's needs and pushes yourself to achieve things that other kids at your age might not, for instance you were the one who assured me that you could walk home on your own after just the first day of transferring to your new school, and have been doing so for the past year.

Of course, there is the occasional backtalking and tantrums which I guess is your way of getting the attention that you have been sorely deprived of at times. You are so good at reasoning that it makes me feel at a loss at times! Being fiercely stubborn is also a trait that runs in our family but I can see how you've mellowed a little this year and is now better able to listen, accept and reflect. You are still a very determined person and at times a perfectionist too. I know, being the eldest isn't easy and you sometimes argue that you are the middle one in the family because Papa and Mama are older than you and thus, you are not the eldest. It's so easy for me to forget how you need me too and that in more ways than one, you are still my baby girl.

I love you so much, my dear. It's your special day and I hope you know how special you are to me, not just today but every day. Thank you for being the angel in my life who guides me and reminds me to be strong, kind and hopeful always.

His happy and confident look in this pic is deceiving because this boy was actually very scared to go on the ladder and would only climb a couple of rungs before he screamed for help, even though we have visited more than once. Haha.

Yup, he is very different from his thrillseeker sisters who love roller coasters (think the likes of Battlestar Galatica) and anything that is challenging or gives an adrenaline rush, which was apparent even from a young age.

Nonetheless, I tell myself to celebrate him for who he is and never stop encouraging him to reach for the sky. Because one day, when I least expect it, he just might. Just like how he gradually learnt to scoot like a pro when initially he only wanted me to hold him, or how his vocabulary expanded within a few months and can hold proper conversations now although others were saying he was slow at learning to talk.

Grow at your own pace, my dear, and never feel like you have to prove your worth. Because you are priceless and will always be, to me. ❤
