看完《天水圍的日與夜》再回過頭看許鞍華導演的處女作《瘋劫》，很難想像這兩部片是出自同一個導演之手。《瘋劫》從雙屍命案看愛情的背叛與嫉妒，因為愛而瘋狂，而引發殺機。《天水圍的日與夜》則是看淡一切，不爭不搶，一派安詳。兩部影片一生猛一恬淡，各有神采。

《瘋劫》的亮點集中在前半場，開場利用剪接，快速交代出場角色與人物關係，並製造懸念(例如李紈的神秘電話、阮士卓的跟監)，勾起觀眾的好奇心。兇案發生後，影片變得鬼影幢幢，既像是鬼片也是推理劇，觀眾跟著阿明的「腳步」(片中出現大量的腳步特寫，引導觀眾對死者身份的「判定/誤讀」)，慢慢拼湊出兇案的真相。

《瘋劫》的影像有早年香港電影剝削與獵奇的感受，但又沒有太過火(儘管有殺雞噴血裸露的場面)，影片的運鏡、剪輯、畫外音，展現了許鞍華導演的實驗精神與能力，可以理解當年上映時，為何會讓人對這名新導演充滿期待。

可惜《瘋劫》結局收得草率(不像前半場那樣叫人驚艷與難忘)，阿傻這個角色過於扁平，劇本沒有從心理狀態解釋他的「行動」，使得電影就算告知觀眾結果，但我還是不清楚背後的動機(阿傻這條故事線會讓我想起奉俊昊的《非常母親》)。

最初作為清朝抵禦外敵與查緝走私的九龍城寨，在新界成為英國的租借地後，此處卻仍歸清廷管轄，成為清朝駐英治香港的領事館，為城寨這個聚落近百年的模糊政治地位埋下伏筆。整個二十世紀，它的管轄權一直在中英之間搖擺不定，也成為往後惡名昭彰的「三不管地帶」：香港不能管、英國不願管、中國不敢管。

因為疏於管理、也無人敢介入，無政府狀態的九龍城寨就這樣在這海灣地帶自生自滅，孕育出戰後香港犯罪與黃賭毒的主要溫床。妓院、賭場、鴉片煙館、脫衣舞戲院等不法場所大量湧現，一間比一間張狂，全都高朋滿座，就連狗肉店也不例外。

九龍城寨的建築結構雖然看起來岌岌可危，卻從沒發生過嚴重的倒塌事故，建築物能夠維持屹立不搖，正是源自於它們過度緊密鑲嵌的相互穩固。巔峰時期的城寨，融合成幾乎連成一體的建築團塊，形成一個生機勃勃的有機體：走道、水管和電線彼此蜿蜒交錯，外圍雜亂無章的陽台與門窗佈局，使得家家戶戶界線模糊，卻仍運轉著各自的生活。

1987年，香港政府宣布清拆城寨。加拿大攝影師Greg Girard、英國建築師Ian Lambot因而踏入其中，欲記錄下其最後歲月；此拍攝計劃直至1992年結束，亦是最後一名居民遷出時日。由Ian Lambot主要拍攝九龍城寨的建築結構與大廈景觀，而Greg Girard捕捉居住於此之人物特寫及生活面貌，1993年兩人合著出版《City of Darkness: Life in Kowloon Walled City（黑暗之城：九龍城寨的日與夜）》。

「儘管城寨有其令人畏怯的缺點，但當中的建造者和居民卻成功創造出，就連現代建築師利用大量資金和專業知識都未必能夠擁有的東西：這座城市並非一座『有組織的巨型建築』，沒有已固定的生活基準賦予居⺠，而是因應用戶不斷變化的需求，從供水到宗教的各類需求逐步滿足，還營造出屬於這個單一巨大體的溫度和親密度……」作為一部攝影集兼訪問集，此書對九龍城寨的神話提出了質疑，並逐步探討非凡建築其發展背後的真相。
