The planter and pot stand are a pair, taking the shape of a four-petal begonia. The pot and planter both have angular flared rims, a deep converged bellies, flat bottoms, and four ruyi cloud feet. The edge of the base shows traces of jointing to the sides. The bottom of pot is coated with ochre protective glaze with a dozen spur marks, there are five unglazed drain holes, and the number“九”(9) is incised beneath the glaze. On the bottom of pot stand the number“一”(1) was incised into the unfired clay,“Chonghua Gong”was incised horizontally on the glaze and ”Shufang Zhai yong”was incised vertically.
The Chonghua Gong (Palace of Double Brilliance) in the Forbidden City was being renovated during the reign of the Qianlong Emperor, and the Shufang Zhai (Lodge of Fresh Fragrance) was a stage for Qing opera performances and later became imperial apartments and dining rooms.
According to the records in the Archives of the Imperial Workshops, dated 23rd day of 1st month in the 11th year of Qianlong reign, ”[a] eunuch... handed over two hexagonal jun glazed pots... on the 26th of this month... Attach a sticker with name of the place ... Imperial decree: Permission to incise the place of use horizontally and the location of use vertically is granted.”Many extant works are engraved with the name of the palace or hall in which they were used; these inscriptions were probably all made during the Qianlong reign.

Planter with a broad mouth, cylindrical body converging at the bottom, and circular foot-ring. Half of the interior is glazed white, and the exterior is coated with yellow glaze over which shou (壽, longevity) characters are written in red and blue enamel colors. Beneath the rim and around the foot ruyi and transformed plantain leaf patterns are painted. The bottom is unglazed.
Portrait of Empress Dowager Cixi on Her 70th Birthday, an oil-painting by Dutch artist Hubert Vos (1855-1935), shows the empress wearing a gown decorated with the shou character, next to her is a large flowerpot with a shou in which pink peach blossoms is arranged to represent‘the peach of longevity’. These kinds of arrangements of objects with auspicious homophones were popular throughout Chinese history, particularly in the Qing dynasty. Similar examples using the shou character are also found on porcelain.
Yellow Flowerpot with Auspicious Characters (NPM guci 01111) bears the characters ji (吉, luck), xiang (祥, auspicious), fu (富, wealth), and gui (貴, precious) as the main decoration. Within the red characters, there ore green leaves, peonies, and camellias, and lotus. The idea being conveyed is that all living things have a power, of which the plant is the symbol through which the blessing of long life might be conveyed. Paintings with auspicious connotation had become mainstream in mid to late Qing art, the Shou Character Silk Tapestry with one single shou character as the subject is a good example. This fashion also influenced the Empress Dowager Cixi’s choice of décor for planters used
in the court.

Planter with a flared rim, tall diverging walls, a flat bottom, and a ring-shaped foot. On the rim, there are bats, coins, and the character shou (壽, longevity). On the belly, there are realistically depicted pine branches, plantains, and peonies. The bottom of the foot is unglazed. On the bottom appears the mark “Tihe Dian Zhi” in the blue regular script, and two round drain holes which have covered up possibly for growing water loving plants, such as dwarf sedge, narcissus, or for cultivating moss. In terms of décor, the pine and plantain connote longevity and the peony symbolizes wealth. The bat in front of the coin is a Chinese homophone for “good fortune is coming”. Overall, the décor is full of auspicious meaning and connotation. The shou character often appears on Tihedian ware. In addition to denoting that Tihedian ware was made for the 50th birthday of the Empress Dowager Cixi, this suggests the unique design of Tihedian ware.
