-If The Name Doesn't Match, Watch Out.-
A simple concept with a very important value. In karate we wear an "Obi", belt which often indicates our rank, it is where a karate-ka or practitioner of karate-do often indicates their name. There is an interesting exception to that however. Every once in a blue moon you see a karate-ka with a belt that doesn't match his name. Here is the reason behind it.
Sensei Andre Bertel has always been my hero, my inspiration, and a huge role model in my life. A champion with humility, dangerous yet graceful with the ability to kill in combat yet gives people life. He is an extreme powerhouse yet his understanding of the intricacies are outstanding.
The name on my belt reads " 恩道礼" translated as "Andre". This is because I have inherited my sensei, Andre Bertel's belt. I wear this with pride and I am humbled to be able to represent this art or Shotokan Karate-Do.
As I mature as an artist I start to understand the meaning behind the saying. "If The Name Doesn't Match, Watch Out." When one who has inherited his belt fights, he fights twice as hard because he represent his Sensei. He will never give up because his perseverance an dedication he carried on from his teacher. He moves with the drive and passion of a champion because he represents his hero.
Thank you Sensei for the hospitality this trip and for shaping me into who I am today. OSU!
