Taiwan is like a diamond in Asia: Veteran educator Doris M. Brougham
“Taiwan is like a diamond in Asia,” U.S. educator and the founder ( ) of “Studio Classroom,” Doris M. Brougham, said on Wednesday.
“The Diamond is very small, but diamonds shine all around,” she added.
Doris M. Brougham, who has been working in Taiwan for more than 70 years, gave a speech at the opening event of the exhibition ( ) “Foreigners Love Taiwan” organized ( ) by the Taipei City Archives on Wednesday at the West Benevent Square ( ).
Echoing ( ) the theme of the exhibition, Brougham, 95, said she has stayed in Taiwan for more than 70 years and recalled ( ) that when she first came to Taiwan, the land was still developing and many people were facing illnesses.
The veteran educator explained that “the great thing about Taiwan is that people are very willing ( ) to change and to learn.”
She added that Taiwan is a beautiful place and that although “there are many beautiful places around the world, the place is not the most important thing, the most important thing is the people.”
The 95-year-old who has dedicated ( ) several decades to English education in Taiwan amusingly ( ) shared that buffaloes ( ) could even be seen on Zhongshan Road when she first arrived in Taiwan.
She recalled that she learned to speak Mandarin, Taiwanese, and even some indigenous ( ) languages. Yet, she stressed ( ) that the most important thing is to be able to communicate no matter what language we speak.
And we all communicate with each other based on the connection that we are all part of this beautiful island, she remarked ( ).
Brougham ended her speech by stressing that Taiwanese people are very tolerant ( ), and those who have been here all agree that Taiwanese people are very friendly.
“No matter what languages we speak, we are all people living in Taiwan and we are all Taiwanese.”
The “Foreigners Love Taiwan’ exhibition will open from March 10 to April 8, between 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
‘The exhibition features three major sections ( ): “Foreigners Who Love Taiwan,” “Sentiments Beyond 100 Years,” and “High-Five Love Taiwan,” featuring ( ) the stories of foreigners who have made selfless ( ) contributions to Taiwan, such as Mackay, Marjorie Ingeleiv, Robert Swinhoe, Sidney Barton and Marjorie Landsborough, Yoichi Hatta and more.

Prof Roger Chung
Mr Pasu Ng
Synopsis:
Thanks to the advancement of medical technology, most diseases can be cured or subsided. However, there are times that medical technology could only prolong one’s life but could not cure the terminal illness. Facing such situation, patients, family members, and medical staff can discuss whether to withhold or withdraw from life-sustaining treatments that may not help improve patients’ quality of life so that they can die peacefully. Professor Helen Chan, Associate Professor from The Nethersole School of Nursing and Professor Roger Chung, Assistant Professor of the School of Public Health and Primary Care of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, will share with us the concepts and values behind Advance Directive and Advance Care Planning in the third public seminar of the four-lecture series on life and death education organized by the School of Public Health and Primary Care, CUHK. These two health care options aim not only to reduce the pressure faced by patients’ family when making end-of-life healthcare decision, but also show respect to patients’ will.
Professor Helen Chan’s research interests focus on end-of-life care, gerontology as well as care ethics. She has conducted a number of research projects on promoting palliative and end-of-life care, especially advance care planning, among older adults and people with advanced progressive diseases.
Professor Roger Chung’s research aims to empirically inquire into the social determinants of health inequalities, as well as aging‐related issues on multimorbidity and long‐term/end‐of‐life care, and to utilize such evidence to inform health services and policy, domestically and beyond.

Avery Ng Man Yuen’s Statement
Your Honour,
I was brought up by my parents to value the importance of empathy, to care and to feel for others in our community less fortunate. Although I enjoyed great success early in my career, I never had a desire to pursue personal wealth in the more traditional sense.
When I settled back in Hong Kong after years of living abroad, I was baffled and disturbed by how severe the social inequality existed in a city I am proud to call my home. I was struck at how discrimination against the poor and the minorities far too often goes ignored or can even at times is encouraged by the established social structure; and how we cannot have the basic democratic rights and freedoms that other places enjoy.
These were my motivations to join social activism and enter into politics. I chose to spend my energy to speak for the underprivileged, the disenchanted and often ignored segments of society. To offer a voice for those who could not speak for themselves.
Compared to many, I am privileged to have a great education and a certain level of financial freedom and social standing. We are fortunate enough to be able to lead comfortable lives and have the freedom to choose the path that we take. I chose to fight for social equality. Many of those in this court are not that much different. We all love Hong Kong, the place we call home. We chose our different roles in life but with the same aim: to serve others.
Sadly, I fear that many of us are increasingly the exception to the rule. Today far too many Hong Kong people do not have that chance, whether that is our elderly who live in poverty, marginalized youth with few opportunities for social mobility, or workers who give up all their time slaving away to provide the bare minimum for their families. These people all struggle to make ends meet with very limited options in life. “Choice” for them is a luxury that they cannot afford. Let alone having the gratification of being able to dictate their own destiny.
I recognise, with the pressures of life, it is often difficult for people to see beyond their own social bubble. It is harder still to acquire empathy for strangers. Polarized political division increasingly has driven a wedge between people, making it sometimes impossible for people to understand and empathise with one another, to disagree agreeably, and attempt to find some level of compromise.
It has always been my hope that a more democratic system could be the bridge that heals this social divide or at the very least allow us to choose how we can live together in our home.
I’m certain that none of us in this court wanted to see the turmoil in 2019, which has seen our whole society suffer regardless of political preference. Distrust, hatred, and fear has engulfed Hong Kong. Today is certainly not the right forum for this immense topic. However, I hope the court can understand that the Judiciary alone cannot resolve the deep-rooted socio-political divide which exist.
It will take our collective strength, courage, honesty, and empathy to mend our home. Looking at my fellow defendants with their extraordinary history in serving this society, I believe they can do far greater good among us in society than being locked in prison.
In pursuit of the rights of all Hong Kong people, I have broken the law. I am prepared to face the court’s judgement. I am proud to be in the company of my esteemed fellows who have spent their lives championing the rule of law, fighting for the democracy and voicing for the voiceless.
I believe the storm-clouds that currently reside over our home will one day lift, and make way for a bright and clear day. I believe love and empathy will eventually prevail.

Chinese Lyrics :
English Lyrics :
The outline of spring's deep dream
That had blurred way too much returns to me
When the flower petals chased after my moves,
Quiet under the dim twilight
Balancing on tiptoe, moon rabbits dance,
Whistling and flying through the stars
In a splash of color,
I begin chasing
A star spinning round,
Spinning round, a small flower bud
"Bloom, bloom!" I begged of the moon,
"And dress the gentle shadows in your light makeup."
But I never knew, never knew, augh! I give up!
I still don't know where this little flower bud will end up.
Looking down through the shrinking clouds of smoke,
A sparkler suddenly blossomed to life
In a blinding dream.
In a splash of color,
Sparks begin
And the strange stars
One after another, changed their faces
Bloom, bloom! Twirl right around
Like a ballerina for a fleeting moment
But I think, I think something's moving in the shadows
From behind my back, ah, run away!
The arc of shadow drawn
On the moon extends beyond the heat haze
And, it bloomed already! Into a round flower,
It bloomed, it bloomed! Fragments of stars
Cried on the other side of the moon and unnoticed to me,
The hidden rabbits continued
To draw an arc
"Bloom, bloom!" I begged of the moon
"And dress the gentle shadows in your light makeup."
But I never knew, never knew, augh! I give up!
I don't know these little flower buds,
But they bloom, they bloomed!
Blowing in the wind, dressing the gentle hill in light makeup
Their footsteps ring, whistling to one another
From their dignified, quietly beautiful hearts.

Chinese Lyrics :
English Lyrics :
Drowning in nostalgia, we were still young
I was just looking at the sun while the clouds remained
We were so standoffish, with the overflowing voice
I couldn't express the things that are so important to us
I tried to embrace the shapeless color
I learned about the days of expectation and anxiety with the taste of regret
I want to reach out to a world I don't know
But I put my pretended strength back in my pocket
I want to remember all the pain that surrounds my kindness
Simply pray and pray, even if I am reborn
I don't want to forget that uncertain future
Tears that intertwined and trail down the cheek
are the taste same as the promise from that day
Even if they become ashes and everything becomes vague
Somewhere far away beyond this night, it is dyed in blue
I've been dreaming all night long with these overflowed feelings
The moon cast a shadow without being found
I couldn't sleep and couldn't let go of our hands
You're the one I yearn for, yet somehow I've kept you away
All the things my eyes saw on that day have also become hazy
It just hurts and hurts and I can't stand it
The blueness of the sky is deep and cold.
Our shoulders slowly close together
You shivered, I pass on my slight warmth
To the world we haven't seen yet, with flowers dancing in the wind
Somewhere far away beyond this night, it is dyed in blue
The mistakes I made and even the regrets are irreplaceable, so I...
Just hope and hope even if you are reborn
I want to touch and sing along with the uncertain future
The taste of tears that fall and fall down my cheeks
are the taste same as the promise from that day
Even if they become ashes and everything becomes vague
Somewhere far away beyond this night, it is dyed in blue
