#拒絕聖誕酒氣的女王 🇬🇧

每逢聖誕節,英國女王伊莉莎白二世都會透過廣播跟電視,向英國及大英國協人民祝賀聖誕快樂,這項傳統始於85年前,她的祖父喬治五世受BBC之邀,在1932年發表第一次的廣播祝福。「聖誕廣播」是少數幾個皇室可以不受幕僚規範,大膽「自由發揮」的場合,也因此在往後的歲月裡,女王每年都會把握機會,傳達她最深切的祝福跟想法。
不過,為何女王大多拒絕使用「Merry Christmas」,而是說「Happy Christmas」呢?
一種說法是,「merry」的辭意雖然代表愉快、歡樂,但在英國也有著「喝茫」的意思。而在Merry Christmas 一詞於19世紀因為狄更斯《聖誕頌歌》短篇小說問世,而成為普羅大眾熟悉的祝福用語時,英國衛理公會正在向社會底層的勞工們宣導「清醒運動」,Merry Christmas 一詞也不免與佳節喝酒狂歡相連。
伊莉莎白二世作為英國國教之首,品行端正且向來注重形像操守,這或許為何她會傾向使用Happy的原因吧!
今年的皇家聖誕祝福,將會在英國時間下午3點正式對外發佈。由於已經事先錄好了,所以英國媒體也開始陸續披露,女王會對於今年「退休」的菲利浦親王,獻上祝福。photo credit: AP
