TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Data retrieved from the train that crashed near a tunnel in Hualien's Taroko Gorge on Friday (April 2) morning indicates the truck that slid down a slope was already on the rail before the fatal collision took place.

Footage obtained from driving recorders on the southbound train suggests the truck appears to have rolled onto the train track prior to the incident. The driver of the train had less than 10 seconds to react and failed to hit the brakes in time, according to Hong Young (楊宏智), chairperson of the Aviation Safety Council (ASC), which is probing the cause of the tragedy.

Taiwan Railways Administration pointed out the train was believed to be running at 130 kilometers per hour at the time and it would have taken 16.6 seconds and a distance of 600 meters for it to stop. The conditions did not allow this to happen, wrote CNA.

To determine when and how the truck got onto the rail and if its brakes had been properly engaged are the key questions in the investigation, Liberty Times quoted Young as saying.

Meanwhile, the driving recorder for the truck was retrieved on Sunday (April 4), which should be able to help paint a clearer picture of one of Taiwan's deadliest rail disasters in decades.

Separately, the Hualien high court has overturned the district court’s decision to release the owner of the truck, surnamed Li (李), on bail. Reasons include the defendant’s inconsistent statements and the fact that his criminal record for forgery had not been taken into consideration by the district court.

【十一荃灣開槍完整片段】無警示近距離開槍 延誤救治至少三分鐘

較早前盧偉聰召開記者會，回應於十月一日荃灣示威中，有警員近距離槍擊示威者心口事件。他聲稱「警員曾警告但無效，生命受嚴重威脅，逼於無奈使用佩槍，制止暴力襲擊，做法合法及合理。」他又聲稱在場警員隨即為傷者止血及施救。本台記者從另一角度拍攝到事發經過，發現與警方描述有所出入。

盧偉聰於記者會聲稱警員曾向示威者警告但無效，而警員感到生命受嚴重威脅，逼於無奈使用佩槍。然而，片段顯示警員舉槍時先指向前方示威者頭部，然後指向右方的示威者於不足一米的距離內向左胸開槍，整個過程不足一秒，並未有向在場市民作任何警示。

盧又聲稱有人向受傷倒地的傷者及警員投擲汽油彈。然而錄影片段中只有一枚汽油彈於警員位置五米外落地，而在場警員亦無為中槍倒地的傷者進行保護或急救，只站在一旁及制服一名示威者，期間該警員更聲稱：「First-aid 我都有啦」。

盧又聲稱在場警員隨即為傷者止血及施救，但片段中顯示傷者中槍倒地後至少三分鐘，除了正在制服示威者的警員外，在旁六位警員仍沒有施救，期間中槍者多次高喊「救命」，惟警員仍沒有理會，直至三分鐘後方有警員低頭查看傷者。片段亦顯示中槍後至少五分鐘，仍未有警方急救員到場施救。

Earlier, Commission of Police, Stephen Lo responded in a press release that an officer fired point blank at a protester in the 1st of October protest. Lo claimed, "the officer had warned the protesters but to no avail and he had felt that his life was in grave danger. He had no choice but to stop violence with his gun; all is legal and legitimate." He also claimed that the officers IMMEDIATELY treated the victim's wounds to save him.
Our reporters recorded the incident from a different angle, which seems to speak differently of these claims.

First, Commission Lo argues that the protesters had not heeded the police's warnings, causing the officer to "feel that he was in grave danger" and needed to use his gun. However, footage shows that the officer first points his gun to protester's head in front of him, then to his right, firing at a protester in less than 1 meter. This transition lasted less than a second, making it impossible for any 'warning' to have been issued.

Second, Lo argues that someone had thrown a petrol bomb at the fallen protesters and police. However, footage reveals that there had only been one such object thrown, falling onto somewhere 5 meters away from them. No police officers could be seen doing anything for the protester shot at all, but were busy subduing another protester or just watching.

Also, Lo argued that the police had IMMEDIATELY treated his wounds, but footage reveals that the shot protester was left on the ground for AT LEAST 3 minutes completely ignored. The shot protester was screaming "SAVE ME", yet the police officer had stayed clear away from him. Only after 3 minutes had there been an officer checking on him. For well over 5 minutes, no police officer could be seen treating his wounds.

Crank up the volume for music and see the Annapurna Circuit through the eyes of a mischievous 11-year old boy. Watch us deteriorate as we drag ourselves over Thorong La 5,416 meters (17,769 feet). We trekked around Annapurna in Nepal with Lionel over Christmas (yes, boy with long hair!). Lionel was really determined to make it and was actually faster and stronger than his parents ... We were all pushed to our limits and left gasping for breath the day we crossed the high pass – but felt a real sense of achievement.

The Annapurna Circuit is widely regarded as one of the top 10 treks in the world. It has an incredible variety of landscapes. You start below 1,000 meters (3,280 ft) in rice paddies and banana plantations, go through pine forests, past Tibetan Buddhist villages, before tackling the high altitude pass of Thorong La. On the other side, you discover the high altitude desert of Mustang and the deepest valley in the world, the Kali Gandaki.

Lots of research and training went into this two-week trek. We love the great outdoors, and Lionel has been a keen hiker from a very young age. We’ve taken several family trips to the Tibetan plateau in winter, and Kirk and I trekked to the Gokyo Lakes in the Everest region 13 years ago. But this was the first time we tackled such a challenge as a family.

Most travel agencies recommend you should not take children above 3,000 meters (9,840 feet). We looked into easier options, including the Annapurna Sanctuary and Kopra Danda – but Lionel was very keen to scale Thorong La. And we felt he was ready to do it, and we had the experience to guarantee his safety. We played it safe, hiring a guide and two porters to help us -- and we would not have been able to make it carrying all the gear ourselves.

Winter offers clear blue skies and stunning views of the Himalayas. You only meet a handful of people every day, and it's easy to get a room in lodges. A total of 60 people crossed Thorong La on Dec 27, and only 30 the next day.

On the down side, it's bitterly cold at night in unheated lodges. And snow storms can cross the pass at any time. This would mean waiting for a few days for the pass to reopen, or turn back and hike for a week.

This is a high altitude trek. Best to resist the temptation to take the jeep road high up, as you increase your risk of suffering from acute mountain sickness. Give yourself time to acclimatise, and watch out for signs of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS), or worse - HAPE or HACE. It is also essential to have proper equipment to trek in snow, not just for yourself, but for your porters and guide, if you have them.
Remember that over 40 people died around Thorong La on October 14, 2014 when a massive snowstorm hit the Annapurna, Dhaulagiri and Mustang areas. Hiking at that altitude always carries a risk.

We organised this trek through Friends in High Places Himalayan Trekking, who provided a guide (Pasang Dawa Sherpa) and two porters (Sonny and Pinju). We would not have been able to complete this trek without them.
