This Peranakan dish is a fav of mine. Growing up I remember eating 2 versions. My father would have grated coconut in the sambal. Some say it’s a northern version of this dish. My mother would make a tangy, sweet and spicy sambal that has a pungent “belacan” aroma to it. Both are equally yummy and satisfying.. but I guess I still like that pungent “belacan” aroma bit more.. so today I cooking Cencaru Sumbat•

I am a creature of habit. When I have found something that I like I would definitely revisit that comfortable feeling. Resorts, Brands, Taste. But one thing that my parents taught me is to give things a try. Who knows you might start finding new things to like . So as a kid I am not those that would cringe away from food that seems foreign to me. I think besides carrots (let’s save that for another day) I practically eat everything else and I find joy in exploring these new experience. Most of the time it’s like traveling .. new stories kept n cherished. Today’s dish i feel is a bit special. Rather than steaming, my mom would pan fry it for that extra sweetness from the fats under the crispy parts of the fishes skin. Ohh sweet sweet taste of good memories. Today’s recipe “Ginger Garlic Pan Fried Fish in Soya Sauce”•

When we were kids I remembered everytime we had huge prawns for a meal the adults would take the heads away. They would say “makan kepala udang nanti cepat bodoh”.. which means the head of the prawn will make you stupid? I’m still trying to find the logic to that. So we kids would stay away from the head and pass them to the adults.. but after I tried sucking the head one time I got hooked. The coral or paste in the shell of the head is so creamy and rich..ohh so yummy... no wonder the adults said it would make us “bodoh” .. we were bodoh for trusting them hahahaha.. this recipe is a much loved dish I guess in many households .. but this is my moms version ya “Lemak Cili Api Udang Galah” or “River Prawn Lemak” •
