⭐️It’s Asian-American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month! AAPI diplomats are a vital part of the State Department, and especially our AIT operation! All month, we look forward to featuring the important contributions of our AAPI colleagues. Today we are sharing Political Section Officer Tom Wong’s story with you.
✨One of my most unforgettable moments during my tour in Taiwan was having the honor of speaking at the Taichung Girls Senior High School, where my mother graduated over 50 years ago. Shortly after graduating, my mom left Taiwan and eventually settled in the United States, where she met my father, who himself had immigrated several years prior. When my brother and I were growing up in New Jersey, she taught us the Chinese phrase "吃得苦中苦,方爲人上人” (loosely translated as "no pain, no gain"). Like countless other immigrants to the United States, my parents endured their fair share of hardships in their lifetime, yet emerged to become productive members of American society. In my own efforts to make my family and country proud, I've never forgotten that phrase my mom taught me. Who would have thought that a generation after my mom left Taiwan, her American born son would go on to serve in the U.S. Army, then join the U.S. diplomatic corps, and have the opportunity to return to visit the very institution that educated her in her youth. -- Political Section Officer Tom Wong
*Tom Wong was recognized as one of the "40 Asian American Pacific Islander National Security & Foreign Policy Next Generation Leaders." See the post: https://bit.ly/2QWWT0r

In 1930s Taiwan my grandmother only had a few years of education in Japanese leaving her mostly illiterate in Chinese. A generation later my mother studied Chinese and English, earned a PhD and became a US citizen. By some measures I’m a step away from my mom’s excellence— no PhD and only semi-literate in Chinese. However, I am confidently fulfilling my mom’s dream for her children to have the freedom to choose our own path. Splitting the first decade of my life between the United States and Taiwan fostered a curiosity for international affairs. Now I am proudly representing the United States in Taiwan, where I can draw inspiration from my own family to advocate and celebrate women’s empowerment.
My mom and I pictured below from a visit to Kenting when I lived in Kaohsiung in the 1990s.

State Department invite you o join us in a Virtual Candlelight Vigil on June 3 (U.S.)/June 4 (China/East Asia/Pacific) to honor the courage of the Tiananmen protesters and how they inspired generations of activists calling for freedom and democracy around the world.
On June 3 in the United States (June 4 in East Asia and the Pacific), please consider participating in the Virtual Candlelight Vigil by doing the following:
1.Record a 15- to 30-second video of yourself holding a candle (either real or a photo/drawing) and talking about how the Tiananmen protesters inspired you or what freedoms you fight for or use each day.
2.Upload the video to your social media accounts with the hashtag #TiananmenVigil.
3.Retweet the State Department’s videos, which you can find on accounts such as @StateDept and @StateDRL.
If you can’t make a video, an alternative is to upload a photo of yourself with a comment and holding a candle (real or drawing). Don't forget the hashtag!
And most importantly, pass the word to colleagues, family, and friends who support democracy and free expression of human rights. We are determined not to allow the CCP to erase the memory of Tiananmen Square, and hope this Virtual Candlelight Vigil will inspire human rights advocates around the world.

The people in my state, Penang.
They are still stubborn as cow.
Stay at home seems so difficult for them.
Maybe Aunty Uncle just don't understand.
Because the announcement plays on truck are only in Malay & Mandarin.
Penang Health Department (JKNPP) contacted me to give them a hand.
I've recorded the rules in Penang Hokkien for JKNPP to play in the truck as well.
In addition of this video, is a detail explanation in formal and straight forward way.
Therefore, the elderly should have no excuse!
We really needs everyone's help to make sure "the cows" understand.
Malaysia needs us to cooperation.
We can't let Wave 3 Covid19 happens ?
Thanks for watching.
Please share to all friends, family especially the elderly. ??
