Was lucky enough to discover CHIPTA via one of the ads I saw on Instastory. My temptation to visit eventually grew stronger after seeing a few eye-catching postings of Chipta on my feed.
Yes, so glad that I went yesterday night. We had a brief conversation with Chef Jack. Was genuinely curious about his background, as to whether he was professionally trained in a culinary school or even a fine dining resto. His answer?
Working as a dishwasher in Tomoe Restaurant at Subang for years & he has actually never been trained to make sushis.
He picked up these skills by just observing the Japanese sushi chef from afar in action, and then went on to open Awesome Canteen & now Chipta - his new dining place that has no menu.
My favourites of the night were:
1. Fresh Scallop topped on sushi rice infused with asam Jawa instead of vinegar - which explains the texture of sushi rice being a little soft as compared to the firm sticky rice texture u get at a normal sushi bar. Interesting twist for sure
2. Amberjack with green chilli sauce and fennel - the fish tasted buttery although its not a super fatty fish as compared to chutoro/ toro
3. Chutoro - nothing to shout about but I love chutoro as a whole anyway.
4. 5-days aged Bonito Fish - served with roasted buckwheat powder, seaweed, champagne vinegar & beetroot juice -you get that sweet yet sour taste while eating this aged fish
5. Beef (Wagyu). Wow - the meat texture was really tender & the sweet sauce was not too overwhelming.
6. Dessert: Curry Leaf Ice Cream that tasted a little like buttermilk wooooo. Kudos to the team behind Chipta that came out with this ice cream. Never in my life have I ever tried something like this. You guys definitely nailed it - it’s like eating icy curry leaf puree with a hint of buttermilk, along with its crumbs - that reminded me a little of the fried chicken crumbs HAHA.
Honestly this whole casual dining omakase experience was 3/5 for me. I was with great company and good food. Ambience was just alright but Chef Jack’s ever changing take on omakase dining here at Chipta makes me want to visit again. It’s definitely a work-in-progress but the food here definitely caught me off guard. I stepped into this place without any expectations but walked out with an intention of second visit already. Did a simple Pepper Lunch inspired meal yesterday and I had DMs asking about it so here’s the (very easy) recipe that I wanna share 🤗

Recipe - Prepare a bowl of light soya sauce, chopped garlic, small amount of mirin, sugar and @liloikanbilis mushroom powder. Mix well and set aside. Place cooked rice in middle, top with sliced mushrooms, blanched broccoli and Hokkaido Corn (frozen or fresh is up to you). I use Wagyu Beef that is #shabushabu cut for easy cooking. Top off with generous portion of chopped spring onions.

Once the @brunohotplatesg is sizzling, pour marinate over (careful not to add too much at once) and add butter to the rice. Stir fry, top with some freshly grated pepper and serve hot. Enjoy! 😋

What’s the catch?The owners of The WAGYU Restaurant, Lorong Yap Kwan Seng own a trading company that does wagyu wholesale. A whole Japanese Black (Kuroge Washu) from Tokushima prefecture is flown in, and hand-carved with Japanese chefs here in The Wagyu Restaurant.
We took a glimps at the menu and were delighted to find value for money lunch sets (130g wagyu steak for RM 80) and reasonably priced wagyu platter (for yakiniku, promotion ends 30th October 2019).

For this video, we went down to Fairprice Xtra at Parkway Parade to EAT A MASSIVE SUPERMARKET Feast! Been a while since I've done something like that and this Fairprice Xtra has a new concept where there is an in-house kitchen, dining area, cocktail bar & coffee shop.
The kitchen managed by Bantong Seafood, will cook any fresh food you select in the store and cook it for you on the spot. They also have a fixed menu for you to choose from, ranging from Fish & Chips to Fried Rice.
For my challenge, I ordered a host of items from the fixed menu together with fresh food like a whole fish that was gutted and cooked for me and a premium snow-aged Wagyu steak.
The standout dishes would be the snow aged Wagyu Steak and Hybrid Grouper. The steak was wonderfully marbled and extremely appealing to the eye. Bantong seared it expertly to medium rare while basting it in butter. It was very sweet and tender, almost like butter with meaty notes. Even eating the fatty parts of the ribeye was amazing, truly melting in your mouth.
The Hybrid Grouper is actually a specially bred breed of grouper by Singapore's own aquaculture company, Apollo Marine. It was thick and full of plump meaty flesh. Steamed whole and dressed in a Chinese-style soy dressing, each mouthful of fish was bursting with flavour.
I do recommend trying their chicken poppers as well, deep fried to perfection with a nice sweet & savoury glazed on the exterior.
